Vista on T60, should I install it now?

Has anyone installed vista on their T60 yet? If so, how is it? My main question is, are there any essential drivers that Lenovo has not yet released?

The reason I ask is that I am thinking of installing a trial version of vista until my free upgrade gets sent out (am I right in thinking that all I would need to do is enter the serial number that comes with the CD?). My installation of XP Pro freezes a lot, and rather than reinstall XP just to upgrade to vista in a month, I would rather go straight to vista now, as long as there are no driver issues.

    I have a T60 15" flexview, ati x1400, dvdrw, intel t7200, 2gb ram, 100gb hd.

    Thanks,
    Matt

If you want it to run smoothly, it's probably best to wait for the official drivers.

10 seconds does not really concern me. I am currently downloading the 2.49gb vistta file, it will be awhile before its done.

I think you'll be ok with Vista on a T60.

I've installed it on my Z61m and it's working better than I expected. Between the Lenovo beta drivers and the Microsoft ones, the only device that is not recognized is the Verizon WAN wireless network adapter, all other devices work fine.

The custom buttons (volume, blue Thinkvantage trigger) do not work for me yet.

I have finished downloading the vista iso image, and the 6 drivers from the lenovo support website. What Microsoft drivers did you download?

I didn't download any drivers, I meant the ones included with the Vista distribution.

After you install, I think there will be some updated drivers that you get through Windows Update though.

I have vista installed on my T60. I love it, i didn't really need any drivers exept for one for my trackpoint. I installed a LEGAL copy of Vista Ultimate from my Technet account. It does use a wee bit of memory though lol.

Folks, please do not ask/link to illegal copies of Vista. We do not permit that sort of discussion here on NBR.

    Thanks.

MSDN Vista here... And no trouble other than the WAN adapter.

Some of the Thinkvantage software still needs work, but I'm sure they'll fix it up in the incoming weeks.

As far as memory usage goes, it is my understanding that Vista reports memory in use differently than XP, so even though it seems like the memory footprint is higher, it's not necessarily the case. It has more to do with Vista's eager precaching.

So how did installing vista go? I was thinking of getting a Lenovo N100 and putting vista on it, but was a bit worried about the drivers for some buttons and WLAN etc... and I had a look on lenovo's site but could only find XP drivers (do these work?), I couldnt find any beta drivers too, oh and how good are the in built Vista ones?

I installed a spanish version of Vista and everything installed smoothly. I haven't played with it extensively but I am not very impressed with Vista.

Well, i have installed Vista Ulimate Edition RTM and Office 2007 RTM on my T60 and it works well, Vista is nice and quick on my T60 so I can't complain.

    Spec: IBM T60, 2.0GHZ Core Duo, 2GB RAM (DDR2 533mhz Kingmax),80GB 5400RPM SATA HDD, 128MB ATI Graphics Card, 14'1" SXGA (1400x1250),CD\DVD Multi Burner. 3YR NBD Warranty.

    Things that don't work,
    1. Thinkvatage and all Leno Apps (We have to wait)
    2. Proper Speedstep and battery optimization settings (I had better batt life on XP than VISTA)
3.Some applications that I loved on XP (Nero, PowerDVD)

I use Winzip,WinRAR, AGV Antivirus, Adobe Acrobat, Klite Codec Pack, SNAGIT with no issues.

    HTH,

    FG :)

Personally I don't think any of Thinkvantage apps are really a neccessity. Perhaps it's the easy user interface that gives it such acclaim.

Yes most definatley, 3:30 with XP on a Std Batt, abt 2:45 with VISTA, bearing in mind that on XP there is the application to setup battery utilization etc and it is very customisable, whereas on VISTA all you have is the VISTA Power Plans that don't have as much customisation.

Like is said, we probaly have to wait for Lenovo apps.....(I hope) :)

How long will we have to wait for lenovo apps and drivers? Until they start to sell pre-loaded vista notebooks?

I have Vista RTM on my thinkpad right now. It works well, aero glass works fine (although not as smooth as I'd like), and in general, it's a nice operating system. I'd still recommend sticking with XP though.

Anyway, battery life has taken a huge hit. I get about 30% less battery life now, even after setting up custom power plans to the lowest possible settings. And Vista's built in power management software is pretty nice; I'd have to say it's even more customizable than the actual thinkpad one:

I'm using some final and beta driver / app releases from Lenovo, and they mostly work fine. The beta ones still need some work, but they haven't caused any big problems. I've installed the power manager, too, but this time around, it just seems to be another interface to Vista's built-in power management options.

The Access Connections app is the only one that might be truly necessary, or else I can't control Bluetooth and Wifi individually.

go to the lenovo home page -> click on "support and downloads" on the upper row of options -> enter your system info -> click on "drivers and downloads" -> now click on where it says "operating system all" in the product support box, change that to Vista, and you should be all set.

"No documents found. Please select another document type." - I tried both the UK and US sites.

I have seen a couple of reviews on TV saying you will get approximately one hour less of batt life using VISTA. that would suck for those lug their laptops without a wall socket most of the day.
