I understand that the W500 updated the 15" T61p and that the T500 updated the 15" T61. Would a one plus y.o. T61p still be preferable over a new T500 for many people? Does the W500 fail as an update to the T61p in any way or is it a significant improvement on the T61p? Thanks!

If you read through the SSD thread you will notice there are problems with all older thinkpads in regards to the SATA bus. the T61/61p only has a SATA I bus speed which means your limited to about 150MB/s or so. The T500, W500 don't have this limitation and that is why I would take either of them over the older thinkpads.

hope that makes sense. good luck.

Both the W500 and T500 have a great new feature, switchable graphics. That allows you to run using the discrete ATI GPU when you need the power, and then run off of the Intel integrated graphics chipset when you need battery life. I can get ~8 hours on the T500's 9-cell battery, a feat not possible on a T61 with discrete graphics.
