ive sold the t61p but there wouldt be a sigmification diffarance when bios controls the fan why should the bios let the cpu gettin to hot?
the fan was working normal when contrled by bios...
there is no reason to be sceptic of the cooling.

If i stress my 15.4 inch T7300 equipped T61 with integrated GPU using Prime95 program for around 1 hour, the temperature of the CPU would not drop below 75 degrees. T61p that i had (with T7700), would get around to 80 degrees if i run the same test. Using BIOS control alone.
Sometimes BIOS firmware are written to minimise the fan from reaching its maximum speed until to say 65 degrees (an example) depending on the laptop size (ultraportable or desktop replacement). This is sometimes done to minimize unnecessary noise emission from when running at excessively high speed, and/or sometimes it is done to prolong the longevity of the fan motor, etc.
My Z61t with T2400 CPU would not kick in the fan at max speed till around 70 degrees, and it would reach 81 degrees after running the Prime95 for around 60 minutes just using bios control alone.
If i use TPfancontrol and use level 7 fan for all temperatures above 60 degrees, then i can do the same test for 60 minutes, and the temperature would not exceed 75 degrees. -
). The amount of energy (heat) needed to be dissipated by the system is close to the amount of energy the system draws from the power supply. It doesn't mean that the CPU will always demand 45W, but @full load it will be close more or less (given the manufacturer stated the TDP correctly to begin with). If you happen to run stress tests on your notebooks you might see it with your own eyes without going to wiki pages.
If the power supply is too close in max output to the total TDP of the system components, running benches/games may result in screen flickering, throttling(not related to CPU/GPU temperatures), etc.
Bottom line:
There's a lot of arguments about TDP and its relation to power consumption. I encourage you to do your own research and find the connection in real life and not to rely directly on encyclopedia.
@Lead_Org
Regarding the fan - very true. It's best not to rely on the BIOS settings entirely. Manual fan control is something we lack in alienware notebooks currently. -
Now I just need $300... -
bump it for the future

yo rionale
any update? -
Yes, what's up with the upgrade?
-
hi guys,
Im sorry but no updates at the moment Ive written zander and in few other bios forums for help... but no one is replaing at the moment. Some guy wrote me that a onlinestore in germany sells w500 with qx9300 upgrade, but it wasnt the qx9300 it was the x9100 :-(
For now if nothing gonna move Im gonna sell the cpu in two weeks and buy the x9100, Im not able to wait months untill someone replays me. -
A little update, I wrot here My W500 wont run the qx9300 : Notebook BIOS and other problems - Wim's BIOS Page
and some guy told me cpu arent backlisted... I always thought a bios update can add a support for a newer cpu and this if your bios dont support it it wont work... -
Im not ready to give it up yet, for this reason I called a service partner of lenovo and told them what I would liek to do. The guy was very gentle and told me in the w500 bios the quad core cpus are not implement for this reason the laptop wont start...
He told me I need someone who can implement it in the bios (work of 1hr) or I can try to put the bios of w700 on the maschine but he says the risk to brick the board is high... -
thanks for the update.
if only bios's were open source... -
Ive already decompressed the lenovo bios´s of w500 and w700 and split them into rom (modules) but im not able to handle it deeper because not knowing a dessambler or hexeditor...
The biosroms of both bios where similar from their size of files but I dont know where to start with margin the right modul or editing it... -

Bios adding support for a Cpu? - XtremeSystems Forums
my last try afterwords it goes on ebay... Im sorry. -
good luck. i and many others hope you're able to find a solution.

If this is really bios modding then I became also a bios modder last night... Even Ive contacted a professional bios passwort deleting team with no response
The point is it seems that the pheonix bios of lenovo is really hard to open, for this reason nobody is able to add something to it, for this reason I think also zender isnt anwsering me, because to change the whitelist seems less easyier then add the support of a cpu...
Ill wait until tomorrow night, if nothings move Im gonna sell it and upgrade only to x9100 and 8gb of ram... Im very frustrated at this point... -
"but im not able to handle it deeper because not knowing a dessambler or hexeditor..."
A good hexeditor is HexDump32 findable on the net...

Other than Artic Silver, zero..... I read.

Maybe some movement, new BIOS from Dez 2010:
Version 3.19 (BIOS ID: 7VET89WW) [For BIOS ID 7Vxxxxxx-based computer]
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Important updates]
Nothing.
[New functions or enhancements]
- Added new microcode of CPU.
[Problem fixes]
- Fixed an issue where the system might not be able to start if a certain HDD
was installed.
- Fixed an issue where the 1680 by 1050 resolution does not work with a certain
external monitor.
Where can I get to know what does this means?!
W500 CPU upgrade - possible now or in the future.
