I am looking to buy a W500 with the 160nit WUXGA CCFL lcd.
I constantly hear how bad the screen is and from the notebookcheck review it looks like there is a 78% nit/brightness degredation from the bottom to the top of the lcd. Also people are saying how the color reproduction is not very good.

For you W500 owners how bad is it really in everyday usage?

I am also looking into the Dell M4400 with the 350nit WUXGA RBGLED lcd, this seems like the logical choice if I were only comparing the lcds, but it seems like there are build quality and slight heating issues with M4400. The cost is also a little higher...

I have a Dell Inspiron with a WUXGA lcd from Sharp and I want my next screen to be a WSXGA+ for a few reasons. I can't comment on the T500/W500 screens as I haven't seen them (and Lenovo uses either Samsung or LG panels), the screen in my Inspiron is evenly lit and besides it's dim I have nothing to comlain about it technically.

But after years of looking at a dim screen and tiny fonts I'm finally fed up with WUXGA for every day usage. Although I like the screen real estate for programming and other stuff, it causes me eye strain and I found out that it's tiresome for me to look at tiny fonts and a dim screen all day (I have glasses since 2 years and I've personally no doubt it was in my case partly because I look at that tiny fonts on that dim screen all day long).

Downscaling the resolution or highering the DPI is not a good solution in the long run, I tried all of it for an extended period (actually under Linux this works very well, but in Vista it's still quirky now and then with different applications and Windows itself). I found WSXGA+ resolution to be the best choice for me for every day usage.

I was considering the M4400 too but dumped it for the reasons you gave. For me it would also be a tad to noisy and the WUXGA RGBLED screen is actually glossy.

Not sure if you have decided on screen (or computer) yet, but I just recieved my W500 right before Christmas and I ordered the UXGA screen. I don't have too many references of other montiors but I don't find the screen to be too dim. Its dimmer than my XGA Dell monitor at the office, but its brighter than the UXGA on my 5 year old dell Inspiron 8600. A friend of mine has a T61 with a SXGA screen and its roughly the same brightness. Using an UXGA screen isn't too bad since I am used to it, and actually I hate my work monitor since the resolution is so low. I did bump the DPI to 110 (96 is standard) and it works great. I do CAD, 3D work and photo editing and find this computer does it great. Good luck and love the hi res.

i have WUXGA on my W500 but i don't understand your question, you mean the colors differ from top to bottom ?

i do noticed color difference between the L220x monitor when i connect my W500 and the W500 LCD screen , not sure maybe its just i could not adjust the colors of the monitor to match ?

    W500 with WUXGA
No problem, great display and color, no brightness problem.

i am trying to decide between the m4400 and w500 myself too. but somehow i constantly keep myself from buying, because i want something better than what i currently have and something that lasts (comming from a pimped dell ispiron 8600).

what keeps me away from buying the dell is the heat issue. it seems to be ok for browsing and stuff, but i know i will hear the vents constantly with my usage pattern.
next thing to complain is, what is really the better graphic chip worth prize-wise, if it throttles down to a very low clock speed.

what keeps me from the w500 is the display. coming from a age old dell inspiron with a sharp wuxga display, i want a brighter lcd. it wasn't an issue for very long until i realized that my eyes really get tired when i have to stare at this screen.

I agree with greatbahman, WUXGA on the W500 is actually a pretty decent screen. No major issues with brightness or contrast here, though it's not as good of a screen as the M4400's 2-CCFL or RGBLED. The rest of the laptop is much better than the Dell though......
