I'm using a displayport to HDMI adapter and HDMI cable connecting the W500 to a Dell 3008WFP.

Unfortunately, it only supports 1920x1200. The Dell 3008WFP has a native resolution of 2560 x 1600. I know that the Dell has a displayport but I don't have a displayport cable now. Reviews show that the Dell displayport allows it to go up to the 2560x1600 resolution.

Is this limitation due to the HDMI cable/port?

the W500 is limited to 2048x1536 over displayport.   you'll need the advanced mini dock to drive your dell at 2560x1600 over dual-link DVI-D.

besides, HDMI is meant for high-definition digital video content and is limited to 1080p (1920x1080), so 1920x1200 is likely the best anyone will ever get over HDMI (and HDCP for that matter).
