This week I plan on ordering a Thinkpad W500 and a ThinkVision L220X 22inch monitor. My question is this, should I keep the W500's lid open or closed while connected to the monitor? I prefer to keep the W500 closed, but am wondering if doing that could affect the W500's display due to built up heat. Any ideas if the display of the W500 will be adversely affected?

I don't think it'll be much of an issue with the lid closed. Just make sure there's enough elevation under the laptop for the cold air intake and perhaps use some software to crank up the fan if you want to go that extra bit.

open because laptops aren't made to run closed so your cutting off the aerodynamics or something like that(?)

Really, it's whatever you prefer. The cooling system is such on the newer ThinkPads (T61 on) that there should not be any problem if it's closed.

Alternatively, you could always keep it open and use the laptop display as well for some dual-display goodness. :D
