    I'd post this in a w510 owner's thread but I don't see one:

I have a two or three year old w510. I thought I had a serious motherboard failure when the laptop wouldn't boot. I called Lenovo and talked with the after warranty tech support and they told me that I had to send the unit in for a replacement motherboard. But reading on these forums (I think it was here), that this might be a USB port problem. The forum was right and I didn't have to send in the computer and saved myself hundreds of dollars. I just have to boot without the USB dongle plugged in.

I'm wondering if this has been fixed in a BIOS update?

The problem is that the logitech wireless mouse has a USB dongle that when plugged in during boot hangs the computer right at the beginning. I have to boot with the dongle out. Once it gets past POST I can insert the USB dongle and it works fine. I didn't have this problem with an earlier logitech wireless mouse that used a different dongle.

Are there any solutions to this problem?

This is in the blue USB 3.0 ports on the left side? If so, that's a known issue that is present in the W510, W520 and W530. Lenovo has not fixed it.

Most people see issues with externally connected USB drives.

I'd recommend using the yellow USB port on the back for your mouse. That will solve the issue.

I have a Logitech dongle in the back USB 2.0 (powered) port on a brand new T530 running Windows 8. It boots up without problem.

I suppose I could test the two USB 3.0 ports or the non-powered USB 2.0 port on the left side, but now I'm afraid to. Sorry. Technical novice here, and I don't want to mess too much with a machine I'm probably returning.

I have two Logitech USB wireless mouses.

    Logitech Nano and Logitech M510.

My Nano has no problem booting with the dongle in the USB port on the back, nor with booting with the dongle plugged into the side. Unfortunately the Logitech Nano can't get some of the needed functionality (middle mouse button doesn't consistently go into rotate) with my Solidworks CAD program.

The Logitech M510 works fine with Solidworks, but it doesn't work at all (no mouse cursor) when the dongle is plugged into the back port. So I have to plug it into the side ports and there is where I have the boot problem. I'm don't know why the M510 doesn't work in the back,

Maybe time to consider a different mouse brand?

Check the BIOS to see if you can remove USB from the boot list or at a minimum put it below the primary HDD and DVD drives. As for the mice, I have had really bad luck with Logitech wireless and CAD. I use Inventor, but whenever I do I put the wireless mouse aside and use a wired mouse.

I just checked the BIOS and found the USB FDD at the top. But moving it to the bottom doesn't help. I still can't boot when that Logitech Nano mouse is in the side ports.

Yes, at work on a desktop machine I use a wired mouse for CAD. But I've found that even that isn't a sure thing. One Microsoft mouse works great and the other has the same problem where the middle button/scroll wheel doesn't work right. Oh well.

It's a bug that has survived three generations of the W5xx. It hasn't been fixed.

Really it's two bugs isn't it.

    1) the W510 doesn't boot with the dongle connected to the blue ports on the side.

    2) the yellow port on the back doesn't recognize the mouse dongle. The speaker indicates that something is being inserted when I plug in (and unplug) the wireless dongle but no cursor is displayed.
