I just received my new W510 and so far I am very happy with it. Very nice laptop.
The only problem I am experiencing is that when I browse in WiFi my connection is terribly slow, I mean too much! I can browse faster with my wifi mobile phone, connecting to teh same router at the same time. I am pretty sure that it must have something to do with some configuration, but I don't really know what to look for. I already tried disabling the firewall (AVG, same as in my old laptop on which I had no problems with speed). WiFi drivers are already up to date.

    Any suggestions? Thanks

Which WIFI card do you have? What kind of router do you have? Are you running on 802.11a, b, g or n? Also, are you using the Lenovo Access Connections to connect your network? What frequency / channel is your router connected to? How far are you from your router when doing this? If you are on 2.4 GHz, are you operating any wireless devices such as cordless telephones, mice, keyboards? What type of encryption are you using on the router? How many other devices do you have on the router?

Have you tried plugging in the cable to see if it is also slow while going over the NIC? Have you tried connecting to another router (different brand / chipset) to see if there is a performance increase?

There's a lot of variables to look at when you're trying to test for this.

I think my first order of action is to see if this happens over LAN. Assuming that you've done so already, try connecting it to another router (at a friend's place or work or even starbucks) and see if you still have problems. Let us know your findings.

    Best,

    L.

DNS settings...? Use OpenDNS. Could just be your ISP.

I had problems with my wireless randomly hanging as I was browsing the net or doing any speedtests with the Intel 5100. The connection would say strong signal and then randomly have slow moments. ie. Click on a webpage, all I would see is a half loaded status bar and a white page, but wait a couple seconds and hit refresh and the page would load like regular.

The problem ended up being a wrong Ad Hoc b/g channel. My router was broadcasting at 6 and the default setting under device manager was 11. After changing it everything was snappy again.

If you never figure out the problem with settings and you have Intel Wireless, try a live Disk/USB Ubuntu 9.10. I had no problems at all under Ubuntu while I was having wireless problems under Windows 7, helped me narrow down the problem to a software problem and not hardware.

OK. While I wait to be able to do a test on another network and check the settings at my home's router, I start to give some more info:

Wifi card: Intel(R) Centrino(R) Advanced-N 6200 AGN (drivers are updated to the latest version)

Router: Zixel P-660HW-D1 802.11g Wireless ADSL 2+ 4-port Gateway over POTS

Not using Lenovo Access Connection, just went automatically through Windows. Do you think with Lenovo Access Connection could work?

Not using any encryption (I live in the country side... non need for it ;) )

I will check frequency / channel, but on my old laptop (which goes faster) the channel was set to 11, same as in the new one

Distance from the router is not an issue, I even tried been just 2 meters away. And as I said I compared it with the browsing speed of my old laptop and my mobile phone from the same distance, all at the same time or separatelly. No differencicies (old laptop and mobile phone are much faster than the W510, and I am not complaining about just slow browsing, it's simply almost impossible to browse at all although I get excellent signal from the router).

Connecting via LAN to the same router works fine.

I think that as suggested I will try asap to connect to another router (no starbucks... I am in Italy and we don't have any here :D )

As soon as I am able to do so I will complete the information. Meanwhile, thanks for all the suggestions.

Oh, one last thing - do you see a difference between performance with the laptop plugged into a power source compared to when running on battery power?

I think Access Connection is worth a try, but yeah, best bet is try a new router right now.

Italy...Yeah, I wouldnt' be caught dead in a starbucks if I lived there either!

no differencies. However I am always on power supply.

I tried on a differente router and it works! Therefore it must have something to do with some specific configuration of the wireless card or the router that is not working properly.

In case you haven't already fixed your issue...

I was having the same exact problem and was able to see it on several different laptops with various Intel wireless adapters (6300, 6250, 6200).

Turned out to be the power management settings as eluded to by a previous poster.

In Control Panel -> Power Options click on "Change plan settings" for the power plan you are using.

Then click on "Change advanced power settings".

    Expand "Wireless Adapter Settings"
    Expand "Power Saving Mode"

    Set to "Maximum Performance"

My wireless throughput immediately improved an all systems that had the problem.

Dear chato73 (if you are still here),

was the problem router from Alice? We are also in Italy (a Siena) and are having the same problem with a T500 (Win7-32), but not with 3 other computers with Intel cards (but all these running WinXP). Was working well for months and suddenly got so slow that the T500 often can not be used for internet at all. Straight wireless activities, such as file copies within the local network, are speedy, it's only the internet that is so ssssllllooooowwww.

Just tried the power settings suggestion and will see over the next few days if that helps.

    Ciao,
    Lenni

I don't use it on my t61p except to see the net.

Solution: Disable IPV6 in the properties of the Wireless Connection. Problem Solved.
