I was wondering if someone knows if for the purpose of video editing with Premiere CS5 and some plugins do I really need the NVIDIA Quadro 2000M 2Gb RAM?

Would it have a mute or moderate effect or rather a profound effect when doing video editing with Premiere 64bit CS5 ?

I am not going to play any games at all, nothing and no CAD, 3D or anything like that. This is going to be just for HD video editing, grading, plugins etc..

Question is do I really need such a beast for that purpose? Or maybe even the NVIDIA NVS 4200M (1Gb) found on the T420s would do fine ?

I hope someone have some experience with it :)

premiere pro CS5/CS5.5 and various plugins can leverage quadro cards to its advantage.

NVIDIA Quadro and Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5

whether you need a Q2000M is up to you.   if you're doing this as a paid profession then i'd say 'yes'.   if it's just a hobby for home movies and budget is a concern then i'd say 'no'.

the fact that you have to ask the question leads me to think that you probably don't need it. ;)

What about CS4? I can't seem to edit video on my W520 without the preview being choppy and eventually it crashes.

one major advantage of the Quadro 2000M is it enables the MPE (Mercury Playback Engine) that allows you to work with native H.264 files. You no longer have to encode the video prior to editing as everything is rendered in real time.

Try Vegas Movie Studio. It's a gazillion dollars less and actually works. I use Platinum Edition. See Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11 Overview

I can second that. I have Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 10.
It works great on the W520.
    No choppiness and no crashes.
