Hi guys!
I have just purchased this w520 from newthinkpads on ebay and im quite impressed with it.
I have a 3d Vision monitor and nvidia usb receiver which I had before which I would like to get working with this laptop but I have been having trouble getting the drivers to install. They are located in the swtools folder and when I ran the setup file, all it seemed it did is copied a bunch of files to program files folder.
Could anyone guide me on how to install these drivers?
ALSO, I have been searching google for anyone that might have got the w520 to work with 3d vision monitors but i ran into a post where someone was asking about getting it to work with a w510 and the reply was that it has a single link port and was not possible (link - forum.thinkpads.com View topic - W510 + nVidia 3D Vision kit)
Please say that is not true with the w520?... ;_;
If it is, I have been thinking about getting hold of a vidock, perhaps that will allow me to get 3D working with my monitor? I have a 8800GT hanging around which could potentially be used (which I used to use for 3D vision before I sold my PC parts) ;S
Any help on getting this working will be very much appreciated! ;O

You might be able to use an active converter for Displayport to dual-link DVI.

The Displayport solution seems like a pretty good idea but I'm a bit reluctant to go down that route for some reason. I have ben thinking about it and since I do like to game quite a bit (in 3D preferably), I figured that the vidock would suit both needs as well as reduce the USB cables sitting on my desk.
Perhaps someone experienced with a vidock working with optimus laptops can share their experience with me? ;S -
Check nVidia's website. They put out new drivers for 3D....
-
And even when manually selecting the device details and downloading the drivers and instaling them, Windows 7 Action Center starts reporting errors like every minute which it wasnt doing before with the original drivers. I took the symptoms seriously and reverted back to the old drivers...this laptop cost me too much so i couldnt help but worry. -

I got nVidia 3D Vision working through DP (I used anaglyph: red/cyan), I used a Sony Bravia as the external monitor (internal display was not compatible). Make sure that you:
-Start Nvidia 3D Vision first through the Start Menu.
-Calibrate the 3D accordingly to your screen.
-Have a game that supports the 3D (Portal 2, Dead Space, etc) and play it to test out if 3D is enabled.
-If your drivers fail, get the nVidia Verde driver for your GPU. -
However, when I was using the drivers from the nvidia page, the USB drivers were found and installed but upon trying to set up 3d vision i get a "driver mismatch" error. Thats when I installed the gpu drivers of the same version and then I started getting the action center errors. Also, I was then able to set up 3d vision but was not able to complete the setup because I got this strange error in red letters at the screen where its showing the shapes. I cant remember exactly what the error was but I also noticed that the shapes were not being swapped fast enough (not shown 120hz but at a speed where I can actually see the shapes flashing and alternating).
...so thats why I am considering the vidock route since there are no matching usb drivers for usb receiver (needs to be the same version as the gpu driver) and it being possible that the DP is not fast /powerfull enough to display at 120hz.
Any ideas?...im really stumped. -
Did you find a solution for this problem? I am currently having the same issue with my w530.
-
Sold the vidock parts on ebay and created a small gaming system. -
Ok, thanks for replying. Probably I will end up this way as well.
W520 - Powerfull kit but...3D Vision via DP?
