I just took a look in my University's bookstore, which has both computers with the 1600x900 display. They look exactly the same.

They also had a Dell Latitude E6520 with the 1600x900 display, and IMO the screen looked slightly better than the one in the Thinkpads. Next to it, they had an E6520 with the 1920x1080 display, and the 1600x900 display was almost on-par with the 1920x1080 display in terms of image quality.

The T420 with the 14" 1600x900 display looked quite griddy, and the E6420 with the 1600x900 display was also griddy but image quality was a little bit better. The contrast on both of the 14-inchers was noticeably lower than the 15-inch displays. Even after seeing the screens, I still don't hate them or refuse to recommend them, because they at least have one thing going for them: resolution.

I was able to check that the E6520's both had LG displays, the E6420 had the AUO display, but due to Lenovo's LCD re-branding I couldn't find out any meaningful info via the device manager regarding the LCDs used. HWInfo would not run due to lack of admin privileges.
