I'm getting a constant on and off high pitch noise coming from under the VGA ports area between the hard drive cover and the fan area even after I have shut down my w520. I googled it and did made sure my usbs were on auto shut off to save battery and supposedly stop the noise but it didn't work since it's already set to it. When it's plugged in it usually doesn't make the noise anymore but it's constantly high pitching when on battery. "Anyone have the same high pitch noise?"

I was doing some troubleshooting and suspect that it is the PSU making the noise. I plug in the power cord and the noise becomes a lower constant pitched noise. If I were to pull the power plug the on and off high pitch noise would start up again. If I were to pop out the battery and put it back in the on and off pitch noise would then stop. Keeping in mind I have started up the W520 and shut it down while on battery. Any thoughts?

I have had the same high pitch noise mainly with my T61 but also very faintly with the w520..it's definitely something to do with it being run on battery power..no idea what it is..never found a solution.

Could it be some wake-on-link settings keeping some component on?

I have it on T60 too. I cannot remember what is causing it but it was something about the capacitors or power supply. Cannot be eliminated if I remember this right. BTW I have this also on my external monitor, nokia adapter, speakers etc... It is normal.

Called technical support and it was suggested to get it sent in. They didn't provide any fix. So I am waiting on a box to send in my W520 to TN i believe. I have base insurance. I well let you know if they fix the issue.

I don't think it is "normal". Unless my machine is not normal. Never heard it. My machine is utterly silent, except for very very occasional fanning...

For an expensive machine like that I would definitely send it in.

Did some more researching online and it could also possibly be noise from the CPU. Tried turning off some CPU management items off as suggested by some forums but the noise is still present.

I believe I have found a solution to my problem so therefore I am not sending it in. I had the box to send it back and everything. I found this out while disabling the fingerprint authentication before or with bios. Apparently when it's set to use the fingerprint authentication to start up the computer with out using the power button it probably keeps the cpu or psu on, what ever the device the noise has stopped for me. Hopefully this helps someone with the same issue. I'll probably try and reinstall the fingerprint app later, maybe this will again let me use the fingerprint authentication to start up my notebook again with one swipe. Looks to be a software or driver issue.
