I got a new w520 a few weeks back and I love the laptop, it's fantastic! My only issue is that in quiet rooms the laptop makes a screeching sound, that seems like it comes from the bottom left of the laptop.

I feel like it's the hard drive making the screeching, but is it normal? Does it mean the drive is bad if it is? What can I do to make the screeching stop, or will it go away over time?

It's the CPU and/or GPU. It won't go away with time.

Well that's legitimately disappointing to hear, I know what people were talking about with the "cpu whine". Is it bad or a somewhat normal occurrence for the laptop? I usually have headphones in so I don't notice it that often. Is it okay to just leave it, or should I try and get in touch with Lenovo?

Yes, it's normal. Though this can partially be solved by disabling CPU Deeper Sleep in the Power Manager for AC mode which will slightly increase the idle temps.. sort of trade-off but I got used to it, after all it's not that annoying.

Thanks for the reply, it's not that much of a bother to me either. It was just weird hearing my new laptop screech at me. So there's no real point to disabling Deeper Sleep then?

I believe you can leave it 'as is'. Personally I rather like my machine being cool, so the chirping sound is not actually a problem.

I hear the fan and a light buzzing on my work W520, but no screeching ever. And even those I have to stick my head next to it to hear when in the office. Granted, my workplace isn't the most serene.

It does go away with time.

As you get older (and/or if you take poor care of your hearing), your ability to hear sounds in the upper range goes away. :D

A 19KHz tone might tick off a teenager something fierce, but a 40 year-old? Won't even hear it.

Me? I'm youngish and have taken good care of my ears, so I'm constantly driven nuts just listening to the whine from the flyback in a CRT, and the Intel CPU whine isn't much better. It is sometimes nice to be able to tell when various components are on, but it's pretty bloody annoying most of the time.

Funny you should mention that. I had a digital camera that screeched like many laptops I've had. It was a brand new model camera and the engineers (whom I personally know) wanted to have a look (or listen). It was surprising to me but NO ONE could hear it LOL. Then they grabbed a younger guy and he could hear it. So they brought out a new one from the lab and it was the same way.

Anyway, most laptops I've ever owned screeched, some louder than others. Both the X220's I have/had screech. My current Macbook air is quiet as a mouse, but I had a Pro that screeched.

Oh yeah I used to HATE the CRT whine. I have dimmer on my lights that whine when not on full brightness. My Dell U2412M whines when it's on standby. I hear it all, I try to ignore it not let it bother me. And I'm not a teenager neither ;)

In my experience, either it doesn't whine or it always will. It will not go away with time, and no software or firmware will fix it, unless you turn off all power saving features on the CPU (like my light dimmer switches the bulbs whine at anything less than 100% brightness).

Agreed. My "it will go away" wisecrack was just that. :D

Oh I get it now - it goes away with time as in when one ages and loses the hearing :D
