    Hi All,

I accidentally press the screen of my Lenovo W520 and it broke something internally cause the screen to blur and showing little or nothing as shown in the attached image.

What can I do at this point as it has ran out of warranty.

Looks like a cracked LCD to me. Let me guess, you pushed it in the upper middle?

I doubt it's too difficult to replace in that model though.

Educated guess 6 screws to remove. Time to do it, 15min max.

Two screws bottom right and left, remove small covers with a knife tip first. After screws are removed, grab the bezel from the inside edge at top middle and pull out carefully. Once bezel loosens, go right and left until it is off. LCD panel is attached usually with 4 screws. Remove screws, take panel carefully out and lay it on the keyboard face down. Use knife to loosen tape keeping the lcd cable in place, remove cable.

Putting it together is just reversing what you did previously. Secure lcd cable with a packing tape or similar, since the original glue is now worn.

Yes, I pushed it in the upper middle. The outer screen is not cracked, just something inside cracked.

What do I replace? Where can I buy it?

    I forgot that part.

When you remove the original LCD panel, behind is part numbers (lenovo's and one from panel manufacturer). You can use those to search for replacement.

    Hi KLF,

With your instructions at #4, do I need the replacement?

Yep. That panel is all one piece, not possible to repair, only to replace.

Well... it's written in the back of the original panel ;)

Remove battery, there is a sticker. What is the model number of the laptop? Look for it in those tables, maybe you get lucky and find it there.

The model number is 4276-CTO. From the link, I'll want to know which part it is. I'm assuming it's Number 10 "LCD Module".

    No.

What you've found is a "compatible" screen which will be vastly inferior to the one that your ThinkPad came with.

You need a *genuine* AUO B156HW01 V.4 LCD, with a FRU number 42T0765. These panels have been out of production and locating one is not likely to be easy and/or inexpensive.

    Good luck.

Is this one the *genuine* one ajkula is referring to? This linked item you supplied to me doesn't delivery to UK

Is this the same and *genuine*? http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-AU-OPTR...Laptop_Screens_LCD_Panels&hash=item5d372293ba

    Mine is W520 not W510

That's fine since many a times there are various FRUs for the same part. It is the AUO panel that I was talking about, correct?

BTW LCDs are the same for 510/520/530 series.

I know, but it's the same AUO B156HW01 that ajkula66 and Zaz both mentioned. I'm only saying this because I'm intending to buy a W510 and upgrade the screen from HD to full HD as well, so we have the same goal here.

By the way, is it possible to get FHD IPS displays on either w510 or 520?

    Thanks ajkula,

I've been looking around for the AUO Screen but none in stock nor available. Those sellers that listed AUO screen don't have them but will sent you an LG Screen as replacement item

If anyone sees the AUO anywhere, please let me know

    Thanks

    http://uk.eetgroup.com/search?query=04W1544

I'm guessing that 42T0765 and 04W1544 are essentially one and same panel.

I doubt anyone would pay those prices though. One left in stock that's divided for the whole EU region but if someone really wants it, there it is.

But that's still a cheap one. For some reason I'm not going to break my own laptops dreamcolor screen anytime soon:
    http://uk.eetgroup.com/i/653278-001-HP-DSPLY-PNL-15.6-FHD-RGB-UWVA

And oh yea... eet is a supplier that doesn't sell directly to customers. So ask your local friendly reseller to order one and expect them to add their own percentage over the wholesale price.

Cheapest way to get the exact panel is to look for a broken laptop, for example one that didn't survive a cup of coffee on the motherboard but panel intact. Not everyone have proper insurance that would cover such an accident and they would sell the computer just to get something back. Now you can imagine me saying with broken english: Good luck.

    What do you mean "mod"?

Does the LG require extra modification or it's the installation the same as replacing the AUO screen?

My understanding is that some finagling with the LCD cable is required since the connectors are not in the same spot.

I haven't done this myself so I can't offer more guidance at this point in time.

I've done -several- screen replacements in these generation T-series. It's very easy, tho it takes a steady hand. Be -sure- to remove the battery before starting, or you may (will) destroy the motherboard.

I bought a replacement screen over the weekend which was delivered yesterday. The manufacturer's name is "Innolux" in Taiwan and it cost me £55 inc delivery.

I installed it last night, the screen is too bright so I had to reduce the brightness. I normally max the brightness on all of my previous Lenovo laptop, but this screen is too bright.

Apart from the brightness, the screen is okay. I can't really tell the difference between this and my broken screen. I'm still on the hunt for the AUO screen if I can find one, but at this moment I'll continue to use this one.

Too bright means you can read it outdoors if such need ever happens. Rather that than too dim :)

I believe installation was not too difficult?

Too bright as the light emitting from the screen was affecting my eyes. Just like looking at a bulb light at close range.

I took me around 20 minutes to install.

The screen will dim gradually .... over a time of a decade...

That's one of the good thing about old screen, is that they are not too bright.

For some reason Moninfo is not reading the EDID on the screen.

    You can try HW Info

Man I'm confused. Google search shows LP154WU1 is LG panel. LTN154U2 is Samsung panel.

    Which one do I have?

    Samsung.

I just ran the HW on my T61 and while the first line is the same as yours, the second clearly shows that my LCD is a Philips one.
