Hello all,
Yesterday, all of a sudden I found out my speakers broke--they only make a single 'click' sound when I try to get sound to come out or when I click on folders on the side of the Windows window. Only when I press mute do they make no noise (still makes it at volume: 0). From the internet, I found 2 or 3 others who share this problem who had to send their machines in.
I was wondering if there are other people who have this problem and/or might know how or why this occurs.
Thanks
Edit: Oops, forgot to say this but...
When ever the computer is under heavy load, the left speaker grill area gets very hot. I was wondering if this heat could have caused the damage?

You should send it in if they are broken. I doubt heat is the issue as the speaker is located next to the heatsink instead of being on top of it. Also, you'd think that only 1 speaker would break from the heat.

I am also thinking to get the W520, I want to know what the the sound quality on them..I prefer the jbl speakers for sure lol but are the W520 speakers sound like regular speakers.. like the T61? or they are better.. sorry if this reply is not related to the topic..

Assuming the speakers on the W20 and T520 are identical, then the speakers are poor, even for a business notebook. They convey sound, but little more than that - a significant step back from the 500 series. For serious/enjoyable listening to music or film or even youtube you will probably want to use external speakers

My W520 speakers just went out after 3 weeks and now just click. Reminds me of the turn-on noise made by cheap amplifiers. I think the sound card on the mobo is hosed. Our IT guy replaced the speakers and still no sound. Even when the speakers were working, they never got as loud as the W510 speakers. I'd say max volume (50) on the 520 puts out what I was getting at volume 22 on the W510. The W510 sound was much better than the T60/61 series. But it's back to crappy with the W520 (When they work) - which I don't understand at all. I am guessing an impedance mis-match between the speakers and motherboard sound card. IT is ordering a new motherboard for this 3-week old laptop. Rediculous.
Overall, I am pretty disappointed with the W520. Other than better battery life, it seems like a downgrade from the W510, which I had previously. The 510 was perfect - they had the BIOS nailed on that one. I could dock it, undock it, plug it into a projector and it always knew just what to do. The 520 has been flaky. It doesn't know the difference between a monitor connected via the docking station and a projector connected to the VGA port. It has big problems with supporting multiple monitors and sometimes, it assigns monitor 1 and monitor 2 to the SAME monitor. So frustrating. I want my W510 back - I'd rather have the shorter battery life than the headaches from this one. BIOS update ASAP, Lenovo. -
My speakers just started to do the same thing. Did a new motherboard fix the problem for you?
This is so frustrating in a new laptop. There are other people posting online with the same problem in the W520. This is supposed to be a premium laptop. -
That's interesting. I encountered the same problem with my W520 a couple of days ago. A Lenovo technician replaced the speakers on site. Unfortunately this did not fix the problem and he ordered a new motherboard (which is on back order now).
Strangely, this morning my speakers started to work again. I haven't changed anything on the machine. I wonder if this could be a driver or BIOS issue? -
Curious, for those with speaker problems....
What 'Lenovo' software do you have installed, and don't have installed.
Like power manager, etc. etc. -
Installed: AutoLock, System Update, Power Manager, Active Protection System, Screen Reading Optimizer, Fingerprint Reader, Lenovo Communication Utility, ThinkVantage Toolbox.
Not installed: Password Manager, Rescue and Recovery, Access Connections, SimpleTap.
