    Hello

I recently got my first Lenovo i have set it up and everything is running fine.

However last night i closed the lid to put the W520 into sleep mode and this morning when i open the lid the W520 didn't wake up the screen was black and the lights/indicators (Think light, Vol and Mute etc)on the laptop would flash every few seconds everything i tried (touch pad, power button, enter, esc etc) wouldn't wake it up. I had to take the battery out and put it back for it to boot back up.. I haven't had this problem the previous nights i've put the laptop into sleep mode.

Does anyone know what my W520 is doing this?

Strange that you mention this, I had that happen with my W520 a few hours ago (with a non-Lenovo install of Win7 x64). I'm really hoping that it doesn't happen again :/

Not good that it's happen to you as well but i'm glad i'm not alone.. I'm not sure if my Win7 is a non-Lenovo install of Win7 x64 or not but I've put it into sleep mode several times now ranging from a few hours to over night and its only happened once so far. I hope it doesn't happen again as well, Had it in sleep mode last night and it came out of sleep mode fine this morning.

If you know how to check if Win7 is a non-Lenovo or Lenovo install let me know and i can check.

If the indicators are lit up, then the W520 is probably turned on. From my previous experience, your issue could be caused by an application that is preventing your computer from going into sleep state (hibernation or normal sleep).

At least in my case, I'm pretty sure it isn't this. The computer went into sleep mode fine (the sleep light came on and everything), it was only when I tried to resume from sleep mode (by tapping the power button) that this sequence of events occurred.

@Dealz: So far, it's only happened to me once as well, I've suspended and resumed the laptop several times since yesterday afternoon with no issues.

That situation can be described as sleep state S3, which you need a constant flow of electricity to allow the RAM to store your work while its "sleeping". S4 is hibernation (writing to HDD) and it requires no power, so you'll have no issue if you don't have faulty RAM (which I do with my T61). Basically, the data remains on the RAM for S3 and the data from the RAM is written to the HDD as a hiberfil.sys file equal to the amount of work loaded on your RAM for S4.

ok but if you have sufficient ram and battery power u should be able to leave it in sleep overnight..

My problem was the same as kpresler, My W520 went into sleep mode just fine (the Noon indicator light came on) just like it has the previous times i have put it into sleep mode. When i open the lid it automatically comes out of sleep mode but for that one time so far it didn't do that the screen remained black and pressing the touchpad etc didn't do anything.
I did notice that from what i can remember the Mute volume light, Mute Microphone light, Thinklight and i think the power light would all flash together every few seconds unless i press the power button down for a few seconds which would stop the flashing (almost like the W520 was now off), But if i then press the power button the flashing would start again.
Only way i was able to boot was to stop the flashing by pressing the power button down for a couple of seconds then remove the battery put it back then press the power button to boot into win7.

You should consider reading this post ( here) on another forum. Also, all you need to do is to turn off you computer and disconnect the battery without pressing down the shut down button.

What's the difference between shutdown with the Shutdown button and removing the battery?

Thanks for the link, i'll give that a read. I pressed the power because i thought it would be better if i removed the battery when the system was off (which i thought it might have been as the flashing indicator lights stopped) Rather than removing the battery when the lights are flashing.

Thanks again for the link i had a read and it was very useful.. I don't have the same problem as the OP as my W520 can still boot (thank god) but it sounds like i have the same problem as vrnsn where he's W520 won't wake from sleep mode when he useing discrete graphics however mine did wake up every time apart from once. I have now switch back to the default graphics option so i shouldn't have this problem of my W520 not waking up from sleep mode
