    Also posted to Lenovo Forum.....

Have Vantec USB 3.0 external hard drive enclosure that is recognized & functional on my W510's USB 3.0 ports (running Win 7 Ult), but not on new W520's 3.0 ports (it is recognized & functional on the 2.0 & combo ports) .

When on either of the 520's 3.0 ports, the drive does not show up in Windows Explorer, & the only evident indication of malfunction is constant chiming of the Win Pro 64 OS's tone for finding and/or ejection of a device; "Found New Hardware & Installing Driver" never appears.

I reinstalled the latest 520 USB driver; same result.

Any ideas as to cause? (Will test another 3.0 external drive over weekend.)

When I flattened the W520, I hit a similar issue with a different enclosure. I installed the USB 3.0 drivers from the SWTOOLS directory that came with the system. I have not tried the download website driver, yet.

That's strange. Have you tried looking in Disk Management by running "compmgmt.msc" to see if the drive shows up once connected via USB3 ports? You could try Thors.Hammer's suggestion too. Let us know how things go.

I have the same problem. Did you find out the cause? W520 or external drive?

Try disable the USB 3.0 power managemen functions from Programs-Renesas Electronics. That solved my problem.

Where / How do you do this? I've looked and can't seem to find a place to disable the Power Management Functions for Renesas.

(I'm having a similar USB 3.0 problem with my new X220 - WD My Passport drives work fine in USB 2.0, but intermittently in 3.0. Lots of things seem to point to a power issue - have put everything I can find on Max Power, turned off things not used (card reader, etc.) - still no fix).

It isn't in the power manager or any place like that.

Start -> All Programs -> Renesas Electronics -> USB 3.0 Host Controller Driver -> USB 3.0 Host Controller Utility

There is a checkbox in that program, right on the first screen, to disable it.

Thanks, bogatyr. I don't seem to have the USB 3.0 Host Controller Utility installed ... have been searching to see if I can find it to download - it didn't seem to get installed when I updated the USB 3.0 drivers ...

I just use the Thinkvantage System Update to install drivers for our laptops on fresh Windows installs. Came with whatever that installed for the USB 3.0.
