I recently purchased a w520 laptop with the FHD monitor, 2630qm cpu, and 1000m gpu. I ordered it without an OS and installed Windows 7 along with system update tool to install all of the drivers. Everything was working well until I noticed that when I turn the brightness down to 12 or below, the screen turns off (it turns back on when on 14 or above, although these change depending on whether it is plugged in or not). As a result, the monitor was turning off whenever I unplugged the laptop. What would cause the monitor to simply turn off instead of changing brightness? The brightness also does not change between 13 and 15.

Another issue is the battery life. I selected "power source optimized" as the power profile and turned on anything that looked like it would help battery life (turn off optical drive etc.) . I also know that the discrete gpu is off. Despite this, the power manager lists the battery life as ~3 hours. Is this just a side effect of the screen?

To begin with, how many cells does the battery have?
