Hoping for some help here. I got my W520 in 2011. Only change I put in was to swap out the harddrive, put in a 256 gig crucial m4-ct256m4ssd2, and put the original harddrive into the DVD slot. This was done within a month or 2 of getting the laptop. It has been working fine. However, recently when I move the laptop from my lap to the sofa arm rest area, the laptop will immediately shut down then reboot. It does not happen all the time but often enought.

The laptop is always hooked to the AC adapters since the battery is not what it use to be. Could it be static (it is winter here), loose AC connector? I have actually swap the AC adapter with another one I have with the same problem. But if the laptop is not moved, it works fine.

Could it be the SSD? I did have to upgrade the firmware to 070H (which is the latest) shortly after installing.

    What could cause this?

    Thanks!

This is a design defect. Static discharge I believe. Should be a huge thread on it in the lenovo support forums, unless lenovo deleted it.

I can confirm that. Static discharge is also an issue on the W540 I currently have. It doesn't happen often, but when it does it is when I hit the "lock workstation" key. I get a little jolt, and instant reboot!

Thanks for the replies. I guess I have to look into a static mat or something :(

I had the same issue on a work W520. Once in a while, if moved it would instantly power off and reboot (this was with it undocked). It was quite annoying. It went to our laptop support team, who updated all drivers and Windows fixes (can't believe that would have done much, but anyway ...), and re-seated the RAM (i.e. took it out and plugged it back in again), and weirdly it was much better after that. At least that's what they said they did. A bit later I received a new machine anyway, but it really did seem improved for the time I still had it.

I'll try reseating the RAM later and see if this helps. Thanks abhattal!

Most people believe it is the RAM cover contacts that were the problem.

I rubbed dryer sheets on the bottom of the W520 and on the arm rest of the sofa where I normally put the laptop. When reseating the RAM, I noticed a lot of dust on the cards as well as the area around the card. Cleaned the cards and surrounding area with some air. Will report back if the issue persists.
