Since I travel a lot, I need a wifi adapter with a good range. I have the Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 and love it. I also have the Alfa AWUS036H 1000mW 1W 802.11b/g USB Wireless WiFi network Adapter with 5dBi Antenna for Range Extension which was very useful with my previous notebook.

However, with the Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 in my W520 I no longer notice any benefit in using the Alfa AWUS036H. The Alfa does detect a few additional access points, but is not able to connect to it.

There's a decent feature table and comparison at Intel® Wireless Products

I agree with huberth. The 6300 is a top notch chipset and when paired with good antenna implementations like those found in several ThinkPads, reception and range is very good.

When you look at the speed/throughput numbers for these chipsets keep in mind they are theoretical maximums. In order to achieve something remotely close you need access points that can support the spacial streams.

The bottleneck for most people is the internet connection device (DSL, cable modem). Don't be seduced.
