I got a W520 without the color sensor or fingerprint reader, is it possible to do an upgrade later on? I'd need a new faceplate and sensor for the reader, and only the sensor for the sensor as the current faceplate has a slot for it?

    Cheers!

From what I understand, the fingerprint reader requires a different motherboard.

I'm curious about the color sensor though. I considered this as well.

How much is a new motherboard? BTW, there are fingerprint reader options in the BIOS.

If the W520 is like the past Thinkpads, you can easily exchange the faceplate for a faceplate with a fingerprint reader, and just make sure to plug in the connectors to the motherboard. The connectors are all there--it wouldn't make sense to make several different permutations of motherboards: no fingerprint reader + no colorimeter/fingerprint reader + no colorimeter/no fingerprint reader + colorimeter/fingerprint reader + colorimeter.

So, in short, I believe you can buy the appropriate faceplate, and you should be fine.
