Does anybody know how the following could be fixed on a W520?

The machine crashes after waking up from sleep. Having said that her majesty decides for herself whether she wants to sleep or not (upon my command indeed!). Sometimes it goes on sleep mode and sometimes just the screen goes black and everyting else works but I cannot bring the screen back to life and have to turn the machine off and on again.

The machine also does not turn off itself. I have to do CTRL-ALT-DEL and choose to turn it off. It starts the process and says it is shutting down and it freezes. The only way to turn it off is pressing the on/off button which results in starting in the safe mode.

I was on the phone with a Lenovo tech support;did the device test(all passed), also updated the bios but non of these helped. His last suggestion was to go back to factory setting and start from zero. I am not sure if this is the right way of doing this.

Does anybody know how(and if) this could be sorted out?

My other issue is that the fan works all the time even at idle with no load and application working.

I appreciate your assistance on these iproblems.

PS, The machine has the 2720 CPU, 8GB RAM, and 500GB HD

Your OS might be corrupt. It is normal for the fan to be on 100% of the time. I find it weird that people are concerned about it. Although, after the latest BIOS update (1.26), the fan spins at around 2000 RPM idle instead of 3000 RPM idle before.

    Thanks for the quick responses...

lead org: the bios is updated this morning.

kirayamato:if I go back to day one and start from scratch, will I lose one of the Office license (it is a two times istallation key)
Regarding the fan, well, the fan in T61p was working under heavier usage than idle. It made more sense. But if this is normal for the new one then I am sure I get used to it.

It depends on your BIOS version. Before 1.26, the fans would be at 3000 RPM at idle and go up to around 3800 RPM max. With 1.26, the fans are at 2000 RPM idle and go up to, still, around 3800 RPM max. I'm not sure if you'll lose one of the licenses, as I don't really have any experience with how the Office licensing works.

I would imagine that if you uninstalled Office before starting from scratch, then you should still have that key to use for when you need it. I've installed/uninstalled my Office 2003 software plenty of times, and I only have 3 keys to work with (and I have 3 computers in the house, so no spares).

I can only get the version 1.25 for W520. I found one Bios V1.26 but it was not for this specific machine!?! it is not on the Lenovo site! or is it?!

If fan on idle is at 2000rpm then it will be 33% less noiser!, I assume! as long as I can find the V1.26.

Well, here's a guide to help you in case you do need to go back to scratch (assuming you didn't receive a Windows 7 disk with your W520 (I know I didn't).

The link to the 1.26 BIOS is on this page. It has not been officially released yet, but rather released for testing for W520 owners. And, no, it isn't 33% less noisy, it is more like 70% less noisy. The downside is about a 5C increase in idle temperatures, though. :p

I could not find any similar complains for the W520, so i thought either this is a corrupt OS issue or software/OS conflict issue. I did not want to go through the pain to start from zero again, so I started un-installing softwares before going back to factory setting.
I am afraid I uninstalled three of them in one shot so I am not exactly sure which one had a conflicting file causing the problem(One was HP Printer application, 2 others professional softwares). But after uninstalling the 3rd software(and rebooting) I tried the sleep and shut down modes and all work perfectly. All three softwares are now installed and I do not have any of the issues any more.

kirayamato, even the fan is now quiet!, no complains here at all  . Yes, it still works all the time but now it sounds like a whisper compared to the noisy fan that I was experiencing before.

After a wasted weekend with all these issues, now I can enjoy the remaining few hours!

Thank you guys again, for all your helps and also the provided links.
