I received my W520 a couple days ago with the 1920x1080 display and I just noticed that the screen is not firmly in place inside the housing, it has a little bit of up and down wiggle room. Now its not a lot, maybe 1/64" of an inch up and down or just enough to feel it click if you push it up or down, but I have never seen a screen that wasn't completely secured within its housing.
Can anyone tell me if this is normal for these models (or some LCD's in general) or should I be contacting lenovo? I'm not overly concerned with it but if its a defect I would like to get it fixed ASAP because I need this for school in September.
Thanks for any help.

it shouldn't move... otherwise it would crack from the application of small amount of external force.

I don't know if the way I explained it made sense but the glass panel itself has some wiggle room within its metal frame that is screwed to the laptop lid. I'm guessing either way this isn't how it should be.

49 views and only 1 opinion on this? I'm wondering whether anyone else has a screen that does this or not, is my explanation just confusing?

W510 here and I'm not seeing anything similar to what you've described..

Ok thanks for the replies guys. I was concerned about the "express depot" warranty thinking it would mean I had to mail my laptop into a big depot in a main city or something. After contacting lenovo I was directed to a depot locator and it turns out this is a walk in service and these things are EVERYWHERE. My city only has about 150,000 people in it but there are 10 lenovo certified "depots" and even in a close by town of only about 2,000 people they have one.
I'm heading to a local depot now to have it looked at and I will keep you guys posted. -
So far so good, Lenovo authorized the repair and a new screen is on its way. The guy said it would be a couple days for delivery so I picked up my laptop and am going to drop it off again when it arrives.

Sounds good

The new screen took about two days to arrive, they called me when it came in, I dropped my laptop off at 12 and they called me at 2 to tell me it was ready to go. New screen is perfect, secure with no dead or bright pixels, although it is bluer than the old one which is curious but un-consequential.

I'm glad it was resolved for you.

I noticed after cleaning my screen about a week and a half ago that the screen was moving as described in the original post. I have since had it replaced twice for the same issue, and the current one that I have still moves within the bezel. Lenovo isn't sure whats going on, but to have three LCD's with this identical problem is interesting to say the least. Anyone have any idea as to what I can do? The tech said that there wasn't anything wrong with the bezel or outside of the screen that would be causing this, so I'm a little worried.
-
Mine has zero wiggle within the bezel.
Be observant during the replacement process; something has to be loose or moving for the screen to wiggle. Might be the rails, might be a deformed chassis, etc. -
I just got off the phone with Lenovo support and they are dispatching new screen rails and a new LCD. Lets hope this fixes it! Thanks for the reply!
-
Mine doesn't.
-
That was a weird problem for a business laptop...
Mine has had no display problems whatsoever, but at least Lenovo came through for you. -
Well... no luck with the new screen or screen rails. It turns out that the lcd panel itself moves within its metal frame. Each one of the "new" screens they have sent has had the same problem. I'm sending the laptop into the depot now. Hopefully they can fix it!

Just got a call from the Depot. They compared the screen with other W520 models that they have there and are currently saying that it is normal for the screen to move like that. It is the way that the manufacturer makes the screen... What do I do now? I don't feel comfortable with a screen that moves on a $2000+ computer. I've never had a problem like this before.
Thanks in advance for the help!
