This is something that I've noticed in the past week or two so I'm putting it down to my upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 at around the same time.
4 out of 5 times that I try to "Sleep" my laptop one of the following happens:
- It gets to sleep mode, then seems to power-off completely and start a cold boot straight away
- It looks like it has been in "sleep" mode, but when I open the lid it starts a cold boot (suggesting it has crashed while sleeping)
In both cases, when I finally log back in all of my previously opened programs have gone and it does the usual "I'm starting up" routine (programs set to run on startup are firing, etc).
The first one is more common, effectively giving me a Sleep > Crash > Cold Boot cycle. I've closed the lid on my laptop and put it in my bag (like I have hundreds of times before) only to get home to find the machine still running, battery almost dead, all my programs have closed and the battery is almost dead.
This is pretty serious as I now have the choice of a lengthy "hibernate" or even worse a "shut down". At work I'm finding that I'm scared to close the lid while I'm walking to a meeting in case all my open files are killed as it does a Sleep > Crash > Cold Boot cycle.
Anyone seen this behaviour? Or got some clue as to what is causing it?

Same issue here with my Dell 15R 7520 after upgrading from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1
A normal sleep now becomes a hard reboot and crashes the opening tabs. What's causing it?

Well, I got a BIOS update and downloaded all of the new Windows 8.1 drivers Lenovo put up on their support site.
The other point of significance is that NVidia finally have official WHQL drivers for their Quattro Mobile cards (K2000M) .. the previous versions were in Beta for months.
Problem appears to have gone away now. Fingers crossed.
