I have ordered a W530 with i7-3920 processor. It will spend most of it's life docked working on photos, but will occasionally go out into the wild.

I will replace the 4GB of memory it comes with, with 16 GB of Crucial memory. The 16 GB will be split between two slots. The question is which slots to install the memory in. I understand that it should work in either top or bottom locations, but I'm wondering if either location is recommended over the other. Especially since the cover will be closed while it is docked. My concern is the heat the system will generate and retain with the closed lid, and when running at high speed.

Suggestions and your observations will be appreciated.

The W530 has a pretty good thermal design. I don't think there would be any heat concerns no matter where you chose to put the memory. However, if you're looking for the coolest place to install, I'd put them under the keyboard. Under full load (Prime 95 + Furmark), the keyboard area is cooler than the bottom of the system.
