    I am Thors.Hammer, only better-looking. :D

Yes, you can buy RAM sticks from Newegg.com and install them yourself. Corsair Vengeance is generally considered good. Tell you what, when you spend serious money to get a serious workstation like the W530, you do serious thing like this:

Pick the brand you like. Find the price you like. Buy 2 pairs (2 x 8GB + 2 x 8GB) of the same brand, making sure that they are 204-pin DDR3 1600MHz.

    Neat, don't you agree?

(What about that stock 8GB RAM stick? Donate it to the real Thors.Hammer.)

I usually buy my machines with a stick I don't care about. In your case the smallest single they'll ship is 8GB. That does present a problem if you want matched pairs.

Until recently you could order with a single 4GB or 2 x 4GB or some other combination that are essentially throwaways. I have a memory junkyard like a lot of people here. I also have a HDD junkyard. And soon, the SSD junkyard will start to fill.

Kaso is better looking. No doubt.

Thanks so much for your time and suggestion.

Final made the decision to order the W530. With the following specs:

Intel Core i7-3940XM Processor Extreme Edition (8M Cache, up to 3.80 GHz)
    Windows 7 Professional (64 bit)
15.6" FHD (1920 x 1080) LED Backlit Anti-Glare Display, Mobile Broadband Ready with color calibration sensor
NVIDIA Quadro K2000M Graphics with 2GB DDR3 Memory
    16 GB PC3-12800 DDR3 (4 DIMM)
UltraNav with Fingerprint Reader for Color Sensor, Smart Card Reader
    500GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm
    Bluetooth 4.0 with Antenna
    Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 AGN

Just a few more question. I intend to add the adata msata and change the Ram upon arrival of the said unit. Ive decided to go for the Corsair Vengance. Could you suggest which of the following is applicable for the unit ordered.

    1. CORSAIR Vengeance Performance 16GB (2 x 8G) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1866 Laptop Memory CMSX16GX3M2A1866C10

    or this

    2. CORSAIR Vengeance 16GB (2 x 8G) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory Model CMSX16GX3M2A1600C10.

    Thanks so much

Might as well get option 2.

If you have PC3-12800 in the machine and install faster memory, the faster memory runs at the slower speed. At least that is my understanding.

It used to be that the dual core W series had only had two memory slots, but all new W530s come with a quad core so all should have four memory slots. You might find some pre-configured W530s or ones in the outlet with a dual core. Those I think would still have two memory slots.

    The specs say:

Max Memory Size (dependent on memory type): 32 GB
    Memory Types: DDR3/L/-RS 1333/1600

Why opt for 4 x 4GB in your CTO? Such a system will come with all 4 RAM slots occupied: that's what "(4 DIMM)" means.

    Are you going to replace two stock RAM sticks with 2 x 8GB to get 2 x 4GB + 2 x 8GB = 24GB total? Or are you going to replace all of them with 2 x 8GB + 2 x 8GB = 32GB total? Or do you intend to be happy with 4 x 4GB = 16GB for the time being?

Why don't you order the ridiculously minimum RAM and then occupy the 4 slots as you wish with what you want?

    I'd stay with DDR3 1600.

BTW, that's a very nice config. If you happen to have some spare changes, please order another one just like that and donate to Kaso. :)

Thanks for the feedbacks... oh man, i think i made a mistake in my understanding regarding this. thanks for stating this, i still might have a chance to change my order if possible as of this time.
Its a good thing to have choices though sometimes it is confusing to those who has limited know how... oh well, one has to try for one to know.
Thanks everyone for the comment and suggestion, i hope this would be a good start for me learn...i hope.

Definitely option2, since spec indicates the main board only support up to 1600, if you buy option 1 it will be automatic downgrade to 1600 for running.

Second this. I've had this happen once or twice whenever cleaning my screen. I'd just get a fine pair of tweezers or something to pull that paper out. display should be fine.

Strictly speaking, it's a slip in quality control during product assembly. Such white thing shouldn't be there at all.

I would remove (and then snap back) the display bezel to see what it is and take it out completely. Check the T/W530 Hardware Maintenance Manual, pages 104 and 105. It's fairly straightforward -- I've done it a few times.

It is encouraging to see that people are actually receiving the W530s they ordered. I ordered mine 3 weeks ago and I check the order status every day. Every day the ship date is pushed back an additional day or two. I have had 8 consecutive schedule slips. Any secret to how you all received your machines? I am starting to get a bad feeling about this.

Nothing particularly odd in my opinion, other than the color sensor perhaps. I am using the machine to automate the operation of a 35mm DSLR and to create and process focus stacked images, but nothing in the configuration reflects the idiosyncratic purpose to which it will be applied.

sorry I didn't see this early. I do not run any autocad software so I don't have experience in that. I think vmware lets you try out their software for 60 days for free. Basically you're running your virtual machine inside your mac. For me it runs flawlessly, the speed is near native and the few times I play games the video performance is good.

    That's a really nice W530. You're ready with the self-upgrade items, too.

    Your steps are good.

Step 2: In addition to visual inspection, I would use HWiNFO64 (free download) to have a detailed report. You could always use Acronis for making backups, but initially I would use Lenovo procedure to create a set of factory recovery discs (1 boot CD + 3 data DVDs).

Step 4: Yes, you can use Acronis to clone the stock HDD image onto the mSATA SSD. (Alternatively, you can "recover" from the just-created factory recovery discs onto the mSATA SSD. In this case, you should physically remove the stock HDD before starting the procedure to avoid confusion. Also, this procedure allows you to verify if the factory recovery discs work fine.)

Step 5: In BIOS, you simply indicate mSATA drive as boot. The other two drives are automagically treated as storage.

Step 6: I would stay away from Norton. I find Microsoft Security Essentials (free download) good enough. Also, you may want to uninstall certain applications that come with the factory image.

Step 9: No no no. The "SSD alignment" concern is so... 2000!

Enjoy your W530. (Get me one just like that, upgrades and all, when you happen to be in generous mood, will you?) :)

If you are going to be storing and using virtual machines, you'll still need to have the storage drive in the list of boot devices. This varies by virtualization product but it is a simple matter of placing in the boot device list after the devices you want attempted first.

Sadly :(, my W530 has been pushed back a few more days. Now I am looking at April 7th and April 14th respectively. I'll keep my fingers crossed, however, I expect further slips before it finally shipped. For all the time it is taking, I hope they are building/testing it good.

I did this with mine and I'm very happy to have a full image of the hard drive as it was originally shipped. If desired, I can really restore it to exact factory install and first time power on.

But what I did after I'd copied the original drive image was to go ahead and run the install on the original hard drive for a "practice setup". I went ahead and added my RAM and mSata. After I was reasonably sure that all of the hardware was working and I was clear on how the updating process was working, I went ahead and put in the Samsung 830 and restored the 'pristine' initial image from the Acronis backup in order to run the 'first time' setup for real.

    Have fun!

Thanks for the suggestion and reply.

    Just an additional questions.

    1. In the Step 2 you suggested...Using the HWinF064, a free download... this is to check on the factory hardwares that has been installed or for any other reason? Secondly, initial cloning or backup using Lenovo procedure to create a set of factory recovery discs ( 1 boot CD + 3 data DVD's ) rather than Acronis.... does it mean the CD and DVD's to create a recovery discs will act as an Installer in case there would be a problem in the future? so I can go back to a factory setting as initially shipped? In case that would be the case what is a boot CD and data DVD... can i just buy any 4 non rewritable dvd disc?
    2. In step 3... i'll just do as suggested regarding the dvd/ cd lenovo procedure creating a factory discs. So would this be good... Physically check unit, Power up W530, once powered try to download thru internet the HWinF064 to check.., Follow the Lenovo procedure in creating the factory recovery discs, turn off then install the 4 rams, msata, two sssd samsung , and remove the HHD. Power up again and change the bios...msata as boot drive and the other 2 sssd as storage. then install the Recovery disc created. then restart to check if boot drive is ok. if all is ok, install acorns true image and other software needed in msata drive... then after all is installed use the acronis true image to back up all installer installed in an external drive so in the event something went wrong with the computer you can install all of the softwares i have installed??? would this be good?
    3. in step 6, i'll follow the Microsoft security essential free download. Could you enlighten me on how to uninstall totally certain application? and what applications would you suggest that comes in the factory image that I would not be needing?
    4. Thanks for the SSD alignment thing.
    5. I hope i will enjoy the w530... i better be!!! Been a mac user for quite sometime. Honestly, mac has been so friendly in term of installation and other stuff like this. but happen to be using a unit not made for my work and just been justifying it to be ok...oh well i hope i'm right about this, for i sold a lot of stuff just for this... in case... just in case, i would be really be disappointed with everything ive done...maybe ill pm you ...hehehe

I would really appreciate if you could detail the process after starting up the computer stage. Not really very good with installation and setting up thing.
From what i understand, upon initial start up of your computer, you installed a Acronis then copy a full image of the factory HHD drive to a CD/DVD? or and external HHD? then after you copy a full image, you tried practice installing on the factory HHD then after you think all is ok... you installed the RAM and mSATA. then installed the restored initial image from acronis back up in msata or Samasung 830 SSD ???

    a Few questions:
    1. what is updating process working and what are the things that needs updating?
    2. Did you still use the HHD original? if so, did you reformat the original HHD after?

Though my computer hasn't arrive yet, I hope when its here i could get all the suggestion and just try to slowly do it. Thanks

You don't copy anything yourself. You tell Acronis to create a backup file that holds the full image of the stock HDD, and you specify where that file is written: the usual location is in a folder on an external HDD. You give that file a detailed name, with date. Eventually, you tell Acronis to read such a backup file and restore the image onto an internal drive.

The great advantage of Acronis is that, at later points in time, you can create backup file s of your main drive, each of which reflects all the changes and updates to the system up to that point.

(In any event, it is advisable to use the Lenovo procedure to create a set of factory recovery discs. You'll need 4 blank DVD-R discs for this.)

Kaso is correct. I used a USB stick (but you can burn a CD/DVD) that had a bootable version of Acronis and an external USB hard drive to back up the HDD to. So before I turned on the Laptop for the first time I inserted a bootable 1GB USB stick with Acronis Recovery on it and an external USB Hard Drive to use to write the Backup to.

When you first turn on the computer, you can hit "Enter", which will bring up a menu from which you can get to the boot order menu. I selected the USB stick as the boot device and booted Acronis Recovery. Then I backed up the Hard Drive to the USB External Drive so I would always have the original image of the HDD before it goes through the "Running Windows for the very first time" process where you set user name, etc.

As for as updating, it's pretty simple. Windows Update will want to do some updates and restart the computer once or twice. In my case, there were also several Lenovo ThinkVantage software updates to go through as well.

After I was reasonably comfortable with the installation and after I'd made the 4 DVD recovery set, I pulled out the original HDD and put in my SSD. I restored the initial backup I'd made onto my SSD and started over.

    I hope that's clearer!

Thanks so much for this Kaso. I'll just use the acronis to back up all the factory HHD softwares in it to an old USB connected external HDD. then make a set of factory recovery discs in 4 blank DVD-r using the Lenovo procedure. It would make a 2 sets of back up copy of the softwares initially installed from factory. then after i have install all softwares like lightroom, photoshop, Cad, office, and others...make the necessary changes and updates for all of the softwares installed then do another acorns backup files of the main drive which is the msata, to an external HDD ( which i will use the original HDD from lenovo inserted in an external 2.5" casing with USB/firewire/esata connection, that i am going to format after i have finished with the msata setup and installation) ... would this right???

Thanks... a bit more clear to me. Just a few more questions...

    1. I bought a Acronis True image DVD CD, not downloaded thru internet software. How can i put a bootable version of Acronis in USB Flash stick?
    2. Before the first power up of the computer, insert the an old used USB stick and External HDD ( to put the back up ), power on the unit then press enter to go the menu, use the USB stick as the boot device and boot the Acronis Recovery. Back up the factory HDD to the usb connected HDD. After the Back up process, make a Windows Update and lenovo think Vantage software update on the factory original HDD, then make a 4 DVD recovery set using the lenovo procedure. Try installing and practice after a bit comfotable, remove the factory HDD and put in the mSata, Rams, 2 new SSD 2.5" then turn on the computer, then restore the initial backup i made from old used USB connected HDD to my msata. after restart computer then go the BIOS by pressing f12 then make the changes... msata for boot drive and 2 SSD for storage...then after... install all softwares needed like the lightroom, CAD, photoshop, sketchup, office...and others. Then connect the original factory HDD thru a 2.5 usb enclosure and format it with no partition, then use the Acronis to back up all new, new changes and updated softwares installed. Then start to load files in the storage ssd like work, photos, office doc files and others, then start using the computer..... WOULD THIS be a good process???

    Sounds right.

    1. Before you install the mSATA SSD, you will have had 2 backups of the Lenovo factory image on the stock HDD: one in the form of Acronis backup file, sitting on an external HDD; the other in the form of a set of DVDs (1 boot disc + 3 data discs), conforming to the traditional ThinkPad approach.

    2. After you install the mSATA SSD, you use Acronis to restore the factory image from the saved backup file onto the SSD.

    3. After you set up your computing environment just the way you like it (settings, applications, etc.), you use Acronis to create a backup of your initial system image. You can have subsequent backups at intervals that you decide.

I would name the backups clearly and preserve them carefully. Finding the right file from a pile of drives can be very frustrating.

Hey all, looking at buying a W530 tomorrow or Monday, or a W520 quad core, to replace the one in my sig.

My question(s) and concerns to help me decide are:

The W530 I can afford comes with Win 8. I don't want win8 and will do a fresh install of 7.

BUT it seems lenovo pulled all the win8 machines and offers them in 7 now, mostly anyways.

Is this due to problems ? Issues of some sort ?

Even more important and concerning is isn't Win 8 somehow 'embedded' in the board, bios, cpu ???

I helped a friend with a new Ideapad core i3 recently that came with Win 8.
There was no coa sticker on the bottom and a genuine win 7 install disc would not run in the dvd drive no matter what.
Had to fresh install win 7 via an external dvd drive.

Is that some sort of MS drm protection of some sort ? On the dvd drive or freakin bios ??
Seems like they try to lock down the pc with win 8.

I got 7 to install on that ideapad but never felt right about it....

So bottom line, does the W530 that comes with win 8 preinstalled have the same deal or not ?

Will i be able to install win 7 glitch free ?

    Thanks much !!

Windows 8 OS itself is not embedded. Rather, the product key for the Windows 8 that is running on a PC is embedded in the BIOS/UEFI firmware on the motherboard of that PC.

With the correct installation media and a valid product key, you should be able to do a fresh installation of Windows 7 on a W530. No problems. (The Lenovo drivers and applications can be downloaded from support.lenovo.com site.)

If Lenovo is offering a W530 config that you like and comes with Windows 7 preinstalled, you should order it.

    thanks Kaso

lenovo has what i want with w7 but for 300 more dollars and 4 weeks shipping time than a new w530 coming with w8 that i can have nib delivered in 2 days from a reseller

i want it faster and cheaper but am real leary of the w8 embed into bios, even if its the keycode, lord knows its also more MS 'code' than a 25 digit #

also concerned their is 'code' tied into the dvd drive, maybe even other ports with a w8 machine, having to do with drm of some sort

really want the backlit kb and ivy bridge :-/

    argggggg, decisions decisions

Are you running linux? There is no embedded code beyond the key that shipped with the system. If there is, it is the doing of spies in China. :D

Does anyone know the memory timing, voltage and CAS Latency of the W530 shipped memory? I know the machine I ordered has 'PC3-12800 DDR3'. That is the speed. But that doesn't say anything about the timing or CAS Latency. I want add memory to the machine when I get it next week.

How can I put any bootable CD/DVD on a USB flash drive (which will also be bootable). Although this question does not actually belong in the W530 thread, I'm offering a general answer:

    1. READ: Convert the contents of such a CD/DVD to an ISO file, using a program like "ImgBurner".

    2. WRITE: Put that ISO file on a USB flash drive, using a program like "ISO to USB".
