I'm not seeing a lot of talk about the W700, much less the W700ds. Personally, I find this to be one of most drool-worthy machines out right now. The slide out supplemental display, probably thought to be impractical by many, would be *hugely* useful to me in my line of work. Add to that the build in WACOM digitizer, 3-HDD and the best single nVidia GPU available right now (Quadro FX M3700), and it's one dream machine IMO.

Maybe it's the price that turns people away, but similar machines from Dell and HP (minus the slide-out display and digitizer) are at least as expensive. All I know is that if I could swing that kind of cash for a new machine, the W700ds would be the one I'd grab.

Has anyone heard much about these machines?

It looks like a solid machine, but in my opinion it is too much of a behemoth. I prefer my laptops to be mobile...

Also, at 8.3lbs. (3.7kg.) - and that's with the battery - it's not nearly as heavy as one might expect.

My 15 inch gateway from a few years ago weighed that much. :)

I did hate taking it places though. :)

I think the price is the main factor with it not being talked about more. People dont talk about the similar machines from other brands much either..

I think the name pushes people away. "For photo pros" and such.

Could be. Honestly though, the color calibrator and digitizer are bundled into one optional component ($150 option). Take that away and you have a normal high-powered mobile workstation with an awesome extra 1024x768 of desktop space when you want it.
