    Hello all,

I'm thinking of buying either a W700 or a W700ds and I can't make up my mind  I'm very tempted by W700ds, but for the price difference of around $400 between the two I could also grab a great normal monitor.

I pretty much always work with 2 monitors and having them available "on the go" is an added bonus, but all the reviews I've read say that the small pop-out panel is not quite as good as the main panel and it may actually become annoying to see the difference in brightness and colors between the two.

So, if you've got a W700ds - what do you think about the second panel's quality?

    Thanks!

I doubt you will find anyone on this forum with a w700ds (it is an extremely niche market machine).

However, gottabemobile did a good video ( Pt. 1 and Pt. 2) with the w700ds and it will give you a good idea of the differences in display quality and general design of the w700ds.

Thank you for the links - it does look different to the main one. As much as I love the potential for it and I would fall into this niche market, the quality doesn't appear to be there really (as far as the attached panel goes)... Time to go to "Help choose a laptop" forum :)

the biggest consideration is in what you plan to do on the second display panel.   if you're working with color-critical information (or even a simple color pallet) then you'll need to make sure it's calibrated.   the built-in colorimeter only works with the main panel.

    food for thought.

Well, most of the time the second display holds an e-mail client or the program I'm debugging (useful to step through the code on one screen and see the program on another - especially when developing graphical components that need to update themselves). Nothing color-critical really, but if the display looks different to the main one (and it does), then it'll be a pain for the eyes and the mind

    Thanks!

I've seen it in person. I think the second display is just about average in brightness/clarity. It's also noticeably less bright than the primary display. I think it's better just to go W700 plus second display. The only time you would really want the W700ds is if you need to have the second display when mobile. That's about all I can think of. Unless you just want to have the latest in tech and money is no object :)

Thank you - that's the general feeling I have as well, but the concept is nice and if they made it a bit bigger and the same quality as the main one, I'd be sold.

    I wish!

I use this with my t400. Granted it isn't the greatest quality screen ever and the res is lower then the 10.6. But its cheaper and just as mobile. Even if there are slight discrepancies between the screens it is the best mobile dual screen setup currently available(w700ds that is)

Yes, if dual screens are a must on the road, I can see how those are great. For me it would be more a matter of being stationary at home 99% of the time, so for that 1% I can survive on a single monitor, at least until some manufacturer produces a laptop with a completely identical (to the main one) slide-out panel.

    Thanks!

I agree, a 17in WUXGA is awesome on the go. I used that setup for a while and loved it. Alot of times i wish my t400 were a 17in because I miss the screen.
