Does it really last up to 5 hours (spec) with the 9-cell if it is equipped with a C2D T9600?

best i ever got out of the W700 with an X9100, dual 7200 RPM drives, FX 3700M, and digitizer was just over 2 hours.   the battery is there to act as a UPS more than anything.

Is battery life going to be better with single 7200rpm HDD and Quadro 2700M graphics?

yes, it should be better.   my system was pretty power-hungry so i figured it would be a good example.

just be sure to have the thinkvantage power management software installed.   it will help your run time.

you would be hard pressed to get your W700ds to get 3 hrs even with single hdd and the Quadro 2700m gpu.

No way, it won't last 5 hours even on total idle. It will barely reach 3 hours even on total idle.

Usual time on "light" load (websurfing etc) will be about 2 hours.
On heavier load - about 1 hour.
