I recently purchased one from the states for $2000 with 3800m and 920xm and I already got a few questions. any help would be greatly appreciated!

when I use windows 7, I use a 3rd party software called Taskbar tweaker and basically it makes it similar to vista/xp, no tabs combining, all can be swap and change location on taskbar etc. with W701DS 2ndary screen to extend taskbar to other screen I'd need another 3rd party software to do so, and in doing so this taskbar tweak function doesn't get carried over.

which brings me to my current situation using windows 8 or 8.1, it has built in taskbar extend to 2ndary screen. however problem with windows 8/8.1 is that the "hotkey integrated system for W701DS" installs but doesn't seem to work. back in windows 7 I can change brightness for both screen if that driver is installed, in windows 8/8.1 I install it but some files are missing, and changing brightness only affect primary display.

anyone know a way to solve this problem?

You might be better off posting this question on Lenovo Forum or TPF.

No answers from me, sorry to say, never owned a 701DS.

    Good luck.

price are dropping but the spec doesn't live up to it's name anymore. overall performance is still great imo, but definitely not worth the 2k i paid for.

was really hoping to see some owners lol, like unlocked bios, remove white listing for pcie slots etc etc.

You have M18x R2 haha, I'm sure going from that to the W701 was a little bit of a shock, considering the two aren't that far apart in price. Only thing I would consider the W700/W701 for is the integrated digitizer in the palm rest; I always thought that was a neat touch.

You can ask on mydigitallife for some of the nice fellas on there for a BIOS unlock/whitelist removal, there is a whole section dedicated to thinkpad modding on there. Just make a request.

I know what you mean, I have the same issue. I have a 600E, T30, X41 Tablet, T60P, T420, X220 Tablet, a MSI whitebook I built from scratch, and the M17x R4. Always wanted to add a W701DS to the collection, really a unique piece.

Be aware though, when you flash a modified bios on the thinkpad and you have the secure chip enabled, it WILL beep around 5 times twice every boot/restart unless you turn off the secure chip. It beeps because the internal checksum is invalid from the modified bios, so it thinks there is an issue, but will continue to boot anyhow. Like I said though, if you disable the security chip, you won't get any beeping. Fixed the issue on my X220 tablet and T420

thats some crazy collection mate, i only go for the biggys normally 18 to 20" unless dual screen like 701ds. got the HP HDX 9000, Xps M2010, Acer 9920G, Sager/Clevo M590KE, M18xR2 and W701DS. only really missing spacebook Gscreen which they aren't selling to consumers for some reason.

also just curious what do you mean by disable secure chip? is there an option in bios to do that?

Only 50,000 W70x/ds were ever sold, and ds mode accounts for less than 10% from memory. It is a collectible. I got mine W701ds for 4 years now, i love it. Still the best thinkpad around.

what we need is bios mod to remove whitelist so we can use extra pcie slots for other non lenovo cards. my motherboard only has 1 pcie slot for wifi card, but i can see there are 2 slots doesnt exist and i am scared try to solder on myself, as machine is really rare lol.

do you know the part number for the motherboard for 701ds that comes with turbo memory total 3 pcie slots?

Edit: also kinda want to find out the PLL for this machine, i dont got a hex stud screw driver so can't disassemble it completely, sucks.

You're not paying for the performance, you're paying for the collectivity and rarity.
