I got my T400 (week or so earlier than scheduled), and the first thing I noticed is how small everything is. As I wanted LED screen, I guess I had no choice but the WXGA+.

Can anyone recommend the best strategy for increasing the size of objects on the screen? I've been playing with font size adjustment in Windows XP control panel, as well as DPI settings, but can't manage to come up with anything in between tiny and dorkily big.

    Any suggestions appreciated...

    Jon

TweakVI includes the ability to choose custom DPI settings, rather than just 96 or 120. It's somewhat buried under Visual tweaks-->Font smoothing and ClearType configuration-->Change screen font and DPI settings-->Custom DPI.

    You can get TweakVI here:

Not really--I kind of assumed I'm "wasting" pixels by doing that (i.e., things will be bigger, but less sharp, so it'd be a wash). Is there something I don't understand about screen resolutions? (Ideally, I'd like the same sharpness, but with just bigger things on the screen.)

Actually, now that I look, the custom DPI thing is built into Vista anyway.

When I got my T400, I also thought the fonts were too small, but I'm getting used to it.

vista is good at scaling the ui, if you turn off windows xp style scaling, it will actually scale the entire window. For example, Final Fantasy XI, if you play it windowed at 800x600, but have vista style dpi scaling on to 20% it will actually take up 960x720 pixels on your display.

you definitely want to keep your resolution at native..i agree with the others before me about changing DPI. if you're using vista, it does actually scale very well.

Windows XP doesn't have good scaling options when compared to Vista, but you can try setting a custom DPI,

    Go into Display Properties.
    Settings tab.
    Advanced button.
    General tab.
    Drop down DPI setting box.
    Select Custom Setting.
Increase 100% little by little (102, 104, 106, etc.) until you like what you see.

    Good luck!
