I was having the same debate. Just ordered a T60p on Tuesday. I wanted to take advantage of the 25% off sale, and I am not overly concerned with whatever minor performance gains the new santa rosa chipset might get me. Battery life was a concern for me as well and I wanted to be able to go with the 9 cell battery. Hopefully the T61p will be released around June 5th like the rumors say, and if its that much better I may cancel my order and get a T61p instead.

The 25% sale is placebo, with hyper inflated prices for Memorial Weekend. The prices for T60p on May 9th, T61's debut date, the prices for the T60p then are the same as if you took prices now, and discounted them 25%. I know this because my laptop came out to $3033.00 both before and after the sale.

Cost is probably the same as the T60p is right now. The premium price of Thinkpad computing, around $3000.00 USD, must not change with new technology, or no one will buy it. At some point, prices are inelastic.

Actually I think the memorial day sale is NOT placebo.

The price of a T60p I was looking at during that IBM shareholder program bonanza (April) came to about $1400.

The price of the T60p during the laucnh of santarosa was around $1550 using the "public" IBM shareholder password.

The price of the same T60p during this memorial day sale (and signing into the IBM shareholder password) came out to be $1403. This is really a sale.

I just jumped no the T60p last tuesday also. Dont forget to stack on the IBM EPP 15% (if it still there), Fatwallet cashback, American express Tailormade and you can get that T60p for extremely cheap.

After tax and cashback rebates and everyting, I calculated my T60p (2.0 ghz, Vista premium) to be about $1250. That a little cheaper than your typical asus models of similar specs!

We'll find out if it is indeed placebo after the sale ends Wednesday.
