    Greetings.

I was armed and ready with my credit card & shareholder discount offer # - primed to buy the T42 R9U...when I got wind of the imminent release of the T43.

Given that I am in no real hurry to make this purchase..would I be well-served to wait until the introduction of the T43?

What do you think, DJAC et al?

    Many, many thanks!

In my opinion, if you're willing to pay an extra $200 or so for the better processor and for the latest and greatest expansion slots and graphics cards, then yes it will be worth waiting.

I'd also wait, even if jsut to get the T42 at a better price. Right now is not a good time to buy an IBM T.

I agree. Waiting is probably worth it - you'll either get the latest model or a better price on the model you've been looking at already.

After the wait, as for choosing between a T42 or T43:
With the new chips, you'll get more performance from the front side bus and the latest expansion slots/graphics cards. This is good, but it's always wise to take a step back and ask, do I really need the latest, greatest technology, or would I like to save some money?

It will take time for PCI express slots to become the norm, and there won't be much out there that you can't connect via another type of expansion slot. But there's comfort in knowing you've got the newest thing... As for the graphics card, it will be nice to get the upgrade, but again, do you need the added performance? You will be paying for it...

Don't get me wrong - I'm sure the T43 is going to be great. There's no doubt that it will outperform the T42 given the newer processer. But just take a moment and figure out if you are really that demanding of a customer (or someone who just absolutely has to have the best technology out there). There's definitely satisfaction in knowing that you have the latest and greatest, but it's also nice to know that you've gotten a great deal on a product that suits your needs. I promise you that the latest and greatest now will not feel the same in six months...

My final note - I've got a Dell Inspiron 5000 Pentium III 650Mhz sitting at home that I bought 4 years ago. It still lets me surf the internet and work with all my Office programs and Quicken. Four years from now, either the T42 or T43 with comparable stats will both do the same thing. Now, if you do a lot of advanced graphical work, gaming, or require some serious portable processing power for another reason, that's a completely different story. It's just too often that people go out and spend top dollar on the best computer on the market only to use 20% of it's capacity (myself included). If you're comfortable spending the extra money to get the best, by all means do it. But if you're looking for a bit more balance between savings and performance, you might want to at least consider models further down the food chain. (BTW - my comments also apply for choosing between higher end T43s vs. lower end ones and the same for T42s)

    Greetings.

I'm going to hold off & wait for the T43.

In your opinion (which I respect greatly) which model T43 most closely resembles the R9U?......and what extra features, if any, would you add to the T43?

    Many thanks.

Is there going to be any other major change to the T-series other than the Alviso chipset? I mean, I heard that IBM might be introducing a 15.4 widescreen but that will probably be found only on there monster the G-series. But, I mean I could really care less about the new chipset. Performance wise on the Pentium M now is pretty snappy for what I use it for.

Toshiba - Quality, price, and features!

I work at ibm and looking internally at the inventory levels and supply chain data, if you're really picky about which particular T42 you want you might not get it much longer nor after the T43's become available to the public. Of course custom built T42's may or may not be offered for long.

One IBM share costs $94 + commission, what's the discount under the shareholder program?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the T40/T41/T42 all share the same accessories right (batteries, bay drives, docks, etc)? Can we know for sure if the T43 will also use all the same accessories?

I ask since we'd already bought quite a few extra parts for a T40, and I'm looking to buy a new T model.

While I'm asking, does the X series (including the upcoming X41) also share some same accessories with the T series (where it's possible)?

Edit: Too bad NotebookReview's latest estimate says March for T43 (where it was January previously)...
