    is it okay to replace one of my (2 x 1GB) original Lenovo RAM with CORSAIR ValueSelect 2GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Laptop Memory - Retail?

Is there going to be any performance or compatibility issue if I do the replacement?

    Experts plz advice.
    Thanks in advance...

Lenovo may use more than one brand, but my T61 came with 1GB of Samsung. Haven't looked lately, but Directron did carry quite bit of samsung memory at very nice prices.

I have another question - is it worth to invest in PC2-6400 memory supporting 800 MHz FSB instead of PC2-5300 (667MHz FSB)?
    I have ordered 14" T61p...

I think the fastest memory that can be used is 667MHz.

800 MHz will work but it will only go up to 667MHz.

Yep webdtc is correct. The 800MHz ram will work but it will be downclocked to 667MHz. So just get whatever is cheaper (which should probably be a 667MHz stick).

I have a question about replacing RAM:
If I have to send my Thinkpad back for repairs, do they care that I've replaced the RAM? I still have my old 1GB stick that came with the computer, and I'm not sure whether it's safe for me to sell it yet.

From what I know Lenovo tells you to remove all parts that you have upgraded the machine with. I do not know if they require you to put back all the original parts but I have heard that this is what people do when they send it in.

Definitely you don't want to send it in with any parts you upgraded because it might not come back with the same parts.

Well when you ship it they ask you to specify what stuff you added....

So you're safe... i've always sent mine with a memory upgrade with no problem.

I Found OCZ is cheaper than Corsair? If they have same specification why the price differs. Do any of you recommend OCZ? or should I stick to CORSAIR or any other brand? Also what does "Value Select" indicate? any idea?

The difference in price is like 1$ per stick, maybe I could get better timings with 800MHz one?

LOL well yeah if it is only a dollar difference I would buy the 800MHz sticks. They might have better timings.

I personally think that ram brands don't matter too much. I would get the cheapest you can find.

I thought the T61p has an 800MHz FSB? Doesn't that mean that 800MHz memory will run at 800MHz?

That is what I thought but it doesn't work like that.

There are multipliers and individual clock speeds to consider and bottom line is that an Intel GP or PM 965 chipset will not (as of yet) run DDR2 RAM at 800mhz.

Fastest timing for 800mhz DDR2 that I have seen have been CL-5.

    While 667mhz DDR2 have some 4-4-4-12. (faster)
