My T61p CTO's Firewire port seems to have decided to stop working. My external hard drive hasn't been responding in both Windows and Linux through Firewire, despite working fine on USB. I tested the hard drive with the same Firewire cable on another computer and it worked. So I've concluded that it's probably the Firewire port on my Thinkpad.

My laptop is still under warranty so I'm going to send it in soon. I just wanted to ask whether I need to worry about backing up the data in my computer for minor repairs such as this. They won't clear my hard drive, will they?

Take the drive out before shipping it off. They would only need it if it's part of the problem which in this case doesn't seem too likely.
