I have this protection on my Visa signature card, but I have never had to exercise it (I was only upgraded to signature a few months ago).

To the best of my understanding Visa will double all manufacturer warranty's (maximum 1 year extension so 6 months becomes 1 year, 1 year becomes 2 years, 2 years becomes 3 years, 3 years becomes 4 years). The manufacturer will handle all warranty claims during the normal period. During the extra year, Visa will repair/replace your item at THEIR OPTION (they may send it back to the manufacturer and just pick up the repair bill, or they may fix it themselves).

I have a similar plan with my Citi Diamond Preferred card, which the plan is issued directly from Citigroup, and backed by MasterCard.

Basically, the MFG takes care of the original term, and then the issuing company (in my case, I'd call CitiCards) will decide how to handle it. If it's a big screen TV, for example, they may schedule a pick-up or someone to come out and repair on-location. With a smaller item, they'd send you to a partnered repair location or to an MFG/MFG authorized location.

I work for Geek Squad part time, and we handled a camera that was under this plan (a friend's of mine, actually). In their case, my friend paid the repair cost, and were reimbursed by their bank.
