    Hi,

I'm thinking of buying a T61p for 4 years of college. I'm wondering which, if any, warranty upgrade to get. I'm extremely perfectionist and can't stand to see any damage on my stuff, especially electronics. However, no matter how careful I am, it's college and there's always room for accidents.

So, which warranty plan is good? I'm considering the 3-year depot warranty for about $100. Should I get the accidental warranty coverage? What exactly is covered with the non-accidental coverage?

There are some things that aren't so bad such as hard drive damage. If they don't replace it, the worst is that I'll buy a hard drive and replace it. However, there are those kinds of accidents that will need me to send it in for service. What kinds of things can possibly happen that I can't fix myself?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

I would defenetly get the accident damage protection with any manufacturer at this point. Initially I thought about only getting the 3 year depot, but my thinking on this has changed. Check out omph's post about his/her horrible lenovo experience, posted just recently. Basically they are saying he/she spilled something on the laptop while he/she maintains this is not true. It is there word against yours, and your word is hard to prove. Not saying that this will happen in every warranty repair case, as it obviously does not but, do you want to be the one stuck in this situation? I don't, so I am planning on getting the accident coverage no matter who I wind up going with (Lenovo, Dell etc). They want to charge the person $750 for a new motherboard repair(basically the cost of a new budget laptop).

Since you are using this for college and the circumstances are indeterminate(i.e you take good care of your laptop and the moron in class next to you spills his soda all over your laptop), I would recommend the 4 year depot plus accident coverage for 4 years. This would at least cover you for all 4 years of college. If you cannot live without your laptop for a few days, then maybe you should check into onsite. I myself don't need this service, so I am not going for it. I am probably going for the 3 year depot with accident coverage for 3 years.

    My 2 cents....

Get the accidental damage protection. The standard warranty won't cover you if your computer gets knocked off a table or gets a beer poured on it. I'm a college student myself, and I work part time for my school's IT department. Anything that can happen to a computer does happen at college, and that's why our recommended Thinkpad configuration includes a four year accidental damage warranty.

Hmm. Seems the accidental damage protection is definitely a good idea. It's quite expensive though. Does accidental coverage include all the services of the warranty plan? In other words, if I buy a 4 year accidental coverage plan, I don't need to buy the 4 year warranty upgrade right?

I would also get physical protection like invisibleshield or the likes :)

Sounds a good idea too. I should look into that.

How feasible would it be to fix things yourself?

Hmm. How is the SafeWare warranty mentioned in that warranty guide?

I got a quote and it's $40/year for $1500. How does it work? If my laptop breaks, do I call them and they pay me $1500?
