I'm thinking of buying some RAM others pulled off new Thinkpads, on Ebay. My question is does these RAM get the warranty that their original host machines get? What happens when I buy these RAM and plug into my own machine?
In case of Lenovo warranty of the ram, providing my own machine SN probably won't work, since it didn't ship out of Lenovo with the new additional RAM, or they will cover their ram FRU assuming same warranty as the machine it sits in anyway?
Thanks.

You probably will have no warranty at all, perhaps some from the memory manufacturer but definitely none from Lenovo. Memory is so cheap, just buy some with a lifetime warranty. Even 2x2GB of PC2-6400 is like... 40 bucks shipped.

I believe it only covers ram installed on the machine...so if you buy ram from another machine, you must have the original machine to claim warranty.
Warranty for RAM/parts off new Thinkpads
