I'm planning to buy a Thinkpad T410 for college. Should I get the 3 year basic warranty extension or the 3 year depot + 3 year thinkpad protection?

that really depends on whether you need the repair done on the spot or not. Although regarding the thinpad protection, if you one of those people whom easily drop their laptops or spill something on it, then it is probably advisable to get it.
But if you are careful than you usually can avoid getting this warranty option, however if you got the money and don't really mind spending the extra dollar on the thinkpad protection, then get it by all means. -
This ThinkPad is going off to college, perhaps even to live in a dorm. No matter how careful the OP is about dropping or spilling, can the same thing be said about the people around him/her?

jane brings up a great point. my 701c got its first battle scar from some kid living down the hall in my dorm. anything can happen.
get the warranty, get the protection plan, and even consider getting personal articles insurance to cover theft or loss. given the cost of college these days, the small cost of additional warranty is nothing in comparison. -
lineS of flight Notebook Virtuoso
You may also want to get the Accidental Coverage from IBM/Lenovo especially if you are going to be using the machine in a dorm.
