In march I purchased a x201s with a 4 years return/depot warranty ref 41C9178 for 99$. The price was lower than the 3 years warranty but I figured it was special deal.

After 1 month seeing my warranty status remaining the standard one year warranty, I relentlessly started calling lenovo to update my warranty status.

Each time I called they said it would be updated within two weeks, yet after 5 months nothing had changed. I decided to call again and received this email.

I checked again on their website and to my surprise the 4 year depot warranty is still offered with a new x201 under the ref 41C9172 but for 279$.

They may have made a mistake with the price of my warranty. But, I feel cheated to say the least. After so many phone calls plus the fact that I purchased the computer in the first place was partly because it had the 4 year warranty option for cheap.

What they are offering me now to repair their mistake is the worse option for me. being reimburse 99$ and "upgrade" my warranty to the maximum, that is a 3 year depot/return for 119$ (the 4 years being only offered when you purchase the laptop)

Any suggestion on what I should do?

41C9178 is the upgrade from a 3YR depot to 4YR depot.   since you started with a 1YR warranty, the email you received is correct in stating that what you purchased is incompatible.

you need to return the warranty and purchase the correct one.   there really are no other options.

I remember a the time I was hesitating between the topseller version which was cheaper but with only 3 years warranty and this one with 4 years warranty.
I lost both opportunities because of a mistake in their option selection system...can't i ask for a rebate or something?

TopSeller models are only available through resellers.   i'm not sure how you'd have an option to purchase a 3YR to 4YR warranty upgrade through the CTO system on a system with a 1YR base warranty.   but, without a screenshot of what you saw when you purchased, it's impossible for anyone to say what went wrong here.

you may ask for a refund on the 41C9178 or you could ask to have that $99 applied toward the 41C9172.   in any case, somehow you purchased the wrong thing and need to call sales to straighten it out.

It would say on his receipt that he ordered a 4yr warranty.

I also purchased a X201s during the same time and opted for the 3yr accidental warranty. But I had to switch because it was not offered in California. I switched it to a 4yr warranty. They refunded me my 3yr accidental and I bought a 4yr warranty. This did not cost me $99 however.

I'm not sure if you can get a rebate or anything for their error. But trying doesn't hurt.

I had a similar but different issue. When I purchased a T400s, it was on sale in a retail store due to the model close out. Only a 1 year warranty was offered through the retailer.

So I purchased the 3 year warranty directly from lenovo.com sales. However, they didn't get the warranty corrected and one thing led to another so I returned the machine and got my money back on the warranty.

After 2 weeks of calls and the run around, I found out IBM is still involved on the backend for warranties. It was if one hand didn't know what the other was doing.

Glad I gave them a deadline and stuck to my guns.

it would say on the receipt that part number 41C9178 was purchased which is a 3YR depot to 4YR depot upgrade.   this is not the correct part number to upgrade a system with a 1YR depot warranty.   the correct number is 41C9172 -- a 1YR to 4YR upgrade.

everything is charted out on this page for reference showing the base warranty and the upgrade result.

in that case, you need to contact sales, explain the situation, and request a refund for that part.   the email you received stated they would issue you a refund so there's nothing to worry about.

it's unfortunate this happened but at least it can be fixed.

fwiw, i just configured an X201 on the sales site and added a 4YR depot warranty.   it came through as 41C9172 at $229 USD.   whatever mistake you ran into when purchasing your X201s has since been corrected.

Thanks erik for the clarification on the warranty reference number.

I still think that such a mistake and 5 months just to be notified that this is not the correct warranty is a failure from Lenovo.

What if I the issue lasted for more than a year...

    I'll keep you updated

    Update:

I finally managed to reach someone at the sales dpt who understood my issue. She negotiated with her Manager to get me the right warranty with no additional cost and now my warranty status shows 4 years warranty.

Note: Try to speak to a US based customer service person, they seem to be more efficient.

Respect on that, you stood your ground and got what you paid for ;)!
I think that warranty is not as expensive as ssd that they have to buy from someone, they dont loose "any" money in your case, so I think honoring your warranty isnt big deal for them.
Now if that number would be in thousands of customers, then I guess it could be a problem.
