    Warranty on Intel SSD OEM?

    The retail version has a 3-yr warranty.
    What about the cheaper OEMs?
    Newegg says 3-yr from Intel but some other websites like Buy.com doesn't say any thing about manufacturer warranty...

    Perhaps the best way to go is with NewEgg then. Currently, there's a 10% off coupon on all SSDs until 12PM tonight, so you've got a chance to save money and get the three-year warranty. :)

    Technically, all OEM drives--including the brown-box OEM sold on Newegg--come with no warranty other than the DoA/warranty guarantees from the retailer. Meaning, if you get a faulty drive, you deal with Newegg, not Intel.

    That said, however, I have heard of people with OEM Intel drives getting warranty support. Make sure you keep all documentation and proof of purchase, since there's no way to be sure what they would want to give you warranty service, if you're lucky enough to get it (and unlucky enough to need it :p ).

    OEMs sold by retailers in a brown box do come with intel's 3 year warranty. Oems sold by a wholesaler like Lenovo, HP, Apple.... only come with the wholesalers' warranty.

    I purchased an OEM ssd 320 from buy.com and contacted intel to check on my warranty info and this is what they informed me. Just to be safe, I would suggest you contact intel with the SA number of your device and ask them about the warranty coverage.

    That sounds like a similar policy to mechanical storage manufacturers like Western Digital and Seagate. Seems reasonable enough.

    I also recall buying an OEM Intel D975XBX "BadAxe" mainboard during early desktop Core 2 Duo days, and seeing a similar policy on Intel's website.

    From my understanding the oem version only gets warranty from the mfg of the laptop so if you buy it installed on a lenovo then lenovo will warranty it ... It you buy it brown box ... Then you have to go to the distributor since there is no global warranty from intel.

    The reason I think they have this policy is for laptop makers to be able to negotiate better pricing in their hardware ..

    Correct. Most top-tier vendors (e.g., Intel, Western Digital, etc.) also know that there are smaller builders who buy OEM parts from a source such as Insight, CDW, etc. They don't have the same negotiating power, and need an included warranty with the product to service their customers. So, a warranty is provided with the OEM product.

    I've never had an Intel retail or OEM product that I've purchased from a vendor like CDWG, etc. go bad during warranty period. That includes several mainboards, and multiple desktop and mobile processors. I think the key is just purchasing from a reliable source. There have been mainboards, wireless notebook cards, etc. that have been faked in China and have been shipped here; purchasing from a solid vendor makes this a non-issue.
