So my T400 came with the basic 1-year warranty, which started Sept-3-2009, and expires Sept-2-2010. Looking at Lenovo's warranty upgrade options, I see:

$139.00 Mobile 1Yr Depot to Total 2Yr Onsite Warranty Next Business Day

$279.00 3 Year Depot Upgrade with 3 Year ThinkPad Protection

    Questions:

    1) the $139 upgrade option, how long exactly is the warranty? The wording makes it sound like it's upgrading my default 1-year to a 2-year warranty. Am I reading this right?

    2) The $279 is a "Depot" warranty, which I suppose is not as good as the "OnSite" warranty offered by the $139 option?

    3) Is there a time frame in which I must purchase the warranty upgrade? For instance, some companies require that you must get the warranty upgrade within 90 days of initial purchase.

Thanks for any info you can provide.

    It is two years total.

Yes, on-site tends to be better than depot.

ThinkPad Protection must be purchased within 30 days. Any other upgrade may be done while your machine is under warranty.

    Thanks ZaZ

Do you know if the cost will stay the same? In other words, if I waited until the last day of my 1-year warranty to purchase an upgrade, will these prices still be the same then?

    Thanks

the cost usually should stay the same, but that can't be guaranteed as there is change in exchange rates.

Depot is horrible. If you can wait 2-4 weeks for your laptop to be repaired, fine. Otherwise, if you want it repaired next day, get onsite.

Onsite was for the year was only $30 when I ordered my T400. I guess if you buy it after the fact, it's not worth it.

Moreover, if you charge it on Amex or some Visa/MC, they extend the warranty an extra year, which is nice. (although not the onsite portion - you have to send it in.)

The warranty guide may be worth a look. Taking a rider out on your homeowners or renters insurance might be an option. In addition to covering accidents, it'll cover things like theft, which accidental coverage from Lenovo will not. Plus you can start/stop the coverage any time you want.
