    Hi Everyone,

I'm on the verge of receiving a T61 with a 6-cell battery, and I have some concerns about the laptop weight. Is a ~5 lb. notebook like the T61 an acceptable weight for a thin and light? - there must be inherent biases in everyone's responses, but is the weight of the notebook bothersome for anybody (and does the 6-cell make much of a difference in weight
)? I'm considering carrying the thing around in my backpack for most of the day.

Also, does anybody with a ubuntu/mint/etc. partition have any problems with overheating while on battery power?

    Thanks in advance.

Wrt your question regarding Linux: no, running Linux won't cause any overheating problems.

5-5.5 pounds is generally considered thin and light. It's really a personal preference. You might to look at the X series if you want something to tote around all day.

Unless tweaked Linux tends to get less battery life than Windows. Less watts is a good place to look if you want to get better battery life.

yeah with what everyone else is buying- 14, 15in $500 7lb monsters, 5lb is considered "light"

    But it's not.

Light and usable is around 3lbs.

I bought a 3 pound X61 recently and am going back to a T61. Carrying 3 pounds is nice. Using its paltry screen resolution is not. I'd rather carry that extra 2 pounds and have a more usable screen. And let's face it, if we can't carry 5 pounds around, we need to go to the gym more often.

If you're planning on using it on the go, then get the 14'' screen AND 9-cell battery! Strongly advised because the 9-cell will last 4.5hrs on battery (my experience). This way, you won't have to carry the power supply which weighs about 0.5lb

I use my laptop for note-taking and it's still quite light. I would hate to carry "another" power supply + the laptop, IMHO
Btw, this is the opinon of a business student about to graduate from university, GL

If I'm carrying two or three 5-7lb books around, I'd rather my laptop not weigh the same.

It depends on what you need your machine to do. If it's just browsing and note taking and paper writing, an X61 fits the bill perfectly. If you need it to be your primary computer, or share about evenly with a desktop, maybe a T series (or upcoming W series) is a better bet. But even still, it depends on what you need it to do.

I personally wished I bought a smaller machine. But I have two desktops that I can take advantage of for file storage, remote storage, media streaming, DVD burning, backups, etc etc. If it is your only machine, I'd stick with a 14 or 15.
