    Hi, folks:

This is really bizarre: Tonight, while pulling my T400 out of its sleeve, I noticed damage in an area I'd never paid attention to before. (See photo.) I honestly have no idea how this occurred -- since I baby the machine, I don't think it's probable that it was a result of my actions (though it's possible); it's more likely this damage was here from the outset.

In any case, I have 1 YEAR THINKPAD PROTECTION and am still under warranty. Any thoughts on how I can address this issue?

    Thanks.

    Ouch :(
Well, it certainly won't crack on it's own... you had it in a sleeve - were you carrying it, or was the laptop + sleeve in a backpack? It looks like something hit the vent area pretty hard, seeing as the copper manifold on the inside is bent in addition to the broken plastic spokes.

Looks like a door hit it. You know the kind with metal and glass heavy. Just call in and use your warranty. Takes hard impact to do that. I actually think you did it as they wouldnt ship it to you like that and it was packaged during shipment.

Another reason why people going for the no frills warranty make a mistake. Stuff happens and consider yourself smart for buying the protection. :)

I agree it didn't happen on its own; I just have no idea how it did occur.

In any case - I am assuming my Thinkpad Protection warranty covers it? Anything about claiming the warranty I should know in advance?

Yes, it should cover it. You're going to have to send it in to get it fixed, as it seems a few components will need to be replaced. I would take out your hard drive before you do so, to preserve your data - Lenovo has test hard drives and does not need yours.

I just liked this so much that I wanted to quote it! There's a reason they are called accidents, and no one, no matter how careful you are, is immune to them.

Thanks for your help and advice: Lenovo is sending a box and they will repair it. Glad I got the warranty add-on; worth highlighting, Jane!

That's great they are taking care of you. The puppy will be link new again and you a happy camper. BTW I've smashed phones on those heavy doors while carrying in front pants pocket. Turnstyles also wreck things. There's no way you dropped it. Anyway, you should feel good.

Well it just amazes me that a lot of people try to get the best deal possible on a new NB and rightfully so but the warranty is also important especially the accidental damage. For a consumer notebook, maybe its a good call not to have it. But TPs are expensiive so just one incident like the OP's makes it a worthy addiitonal outlay.

You mean factored into the non warranty cost? Maybe so. but its still dumb not to get an enhanced warranty.
