This poll is not very well worded... most people use all three, depending on the circumstance... I know I do.

I generally use Balanced because... well... it's a good balance. ;)

However, when I'm plugged in and don't need to charge quickly, for instance, I set it to High Performance. (Why not?) When I don't have access to power, I set it to Power Saver... to... save power. :p

Power Saver. More battery life on the go.
High Performance. More performance on the AC power.

You could compromise by using the Balanced or Power Saver profile with the brightness setting all the way up.

i also use power source optimized.

that just changes your settings from power saver to maximum power, depending on if your laptop is plugged in, right?

Yeah, Power Source Optimized is exactly the same as High Performance when plugged in, so I don't see any point in changing the power scheme when on AC power.

I actually use RMClock for my needs. It works very well... and eliminates the buzz that is caused by the WiFi/CPU changing power states... i get about 4.5-5 hrs off my 9 cell battery with the screen turned all the way down, WiFi still on, sound muted doing just internet/word processing. I think its kind of short mainly due to the 7200 RPM hdd. I plan on upgrading to a 7K200 soon though.
