When doing a clean install from the partition on our HDDs using Rescue and Recovery 4.0, which Lenovo Base Software would be safe to delete [some are pretty obvious], and which ones should be left alone [not so easy]?

I wanted to get a list going for everyone who is, or will try to do an install from the partition.

I did one when I first received my notebook, but for some odd reason, still have about 86 processes going on. My RAM usage was a little over 1gb while the computer was idling. For the short time I had a D820 with Vista Business [using Vista Premium for the T61], the ram usage would not exceed 770mb’s.

Almost half of the processes that you have running have to do with ThinkVantage, so keep that in mind when you want to axe stuff for the sake of lowering memory. The supposedly-acclaimed Thinkpad support tools certainly come at a price.

also just wanted to add... after the install, i went into msconfig (hit start and R at the same time and type 'msconfig' then hit enter) and i disabled ALL the thinkpad things except for the active protection system, on screen display and the power manager and productivity app.

the reason for this is because when you hit the thinkvantage button, even though you dont have all the other apps running in the background, as soon as you choose it under the thinkvantage menu, it will automatically open it up for you.

i also disabled windows wireless finder because i like lenovos tool much better, which can be accessed by hitting Fn+F5. saves you some ram too!

How do you disable the Windows wireless manager again?

Open the Command Prompt window by pressing the windows button and the R button at the same time and you type 'CMD' and hit enter

    Type netsh wlan show settings.

If automatic wireless network configuration is disabled, you will see Auto configuration logic is disabled on interface "Interface name".
    4.

To enable auto configuration, type set autoconfig enabled=yes interface='<Interface name>'.

This sucks, I'm pretty computer savy but I don't know where to begin with uninstalling the crapware or doing a clean install of Vista. I'm willing to pay for the system so why not give it to me at optimal performance without alll the additional crap.

If someone could post a list of running processes with a little description of what the heck each one does that would be great!!!

All it will take is a one computer manufacturer to start shipping computers correctly and I bet their market share will instantly go through the roof!

For those who removed some of the base software, is running Vista, and have a finger print reader, where the user logs in after bootup, do you still have the split screen where it shows that you can login using the finger print reader and login using a password?

I deleted some of the base software and now my login screen does not show a split screen with a finger print login, but i am still able to login using the fingerprint reader.

Does any of the base software affect the fingerprint reader bootup login?

Edit: Found the solution. Click the Thinkvantage button. Go to Thinkvantage Technologies. Go to Client Security Solution. Click Fingerprint. Click Manage. Click Settings. Click System Settings. Go to Logon Tab. Click Fingerprint Logon radio button. Check "Allow user selfenroll in logon."

Now when Vista boots, you can enter by either using your fingerprint or through the normal user/password command.

Well, after looking over the link i posted earlier and running through the services.msc command to disable unwanted services, i was able to get my boot time down to right around 30 seconds from over 1 minute. Not bad.

Processes went down from 86 to 75 while idling.
