Well.. I just got X200(YES!!) and im thinking about downgrading to xp or server 2008,2003. Or maybe upgrading to Window 7??

I'm guessing it is XP but which should i use to save most battery life? and is it possible to download all those lenovo softwares again?

Lastly, any suggestion on power setting?

    Thanks!

First thing I do when I get a new laptop or computer is format Vista right off :) And install Xp. I can't stand vista. But I have used windows 7 and that is something that will finally replace Xp for me...

Do you get about same battery time in Windows 7 as in XP?

Vista has better battery life than XP due to better power management. Windows 7 will as well.

Installing a server OS will kill your battery life. As for Windows 7, I expect it’ll eventually have better battery life than Vista, but it’s still unfinished. Regarding XP, yuck—it’s old and modern OSs surpass it in many ways.

IMHO, stick with Vista until Windows 7 is released. Do a clean installation and it should perform on par with Windows 7 if not more stable given the fact that it has more mature drivers and software.

You can download all the drivers and software for the x200 here

XP Pro is the BEST OS out right now. It's stable as a monolith in a hole. Unlike Mac OSs it is not only stable but functional.

I have 4 computers all running XP Pro. Note Not all XP are same, XP Home cannot compare to XP Pro, XP Home is very unstable- like Win ME. XP Pro is NT based.

XP Pro for sure. Someone said that 7 will finally replace XP, really? How so?

If you go with Vista or Windows 7, be sure to get the x64 version.

+1 for XP Pro. So it doesn't have the same eye candy as Vista, but for a 32-bit OS it's the most stable and fastest OS Microsoft makes. Let's hope Win7 is as fast.

That's conditionaly poor advice. Get 64 bits if you NEED 64 bits. If you plan on using large address or multiple large address spaces then you'll need x64 bit. Or if you have programs bilt thar run 64 bit - well then yes. Otherwise thrres no good need for it,

I agreed with some of your points until you threw in the OS X jab, which pretty much invalidated the whole thing here. Then you added the XP Home bit, which is a complete and utter falsehood.

XP Pro doesn't have the same enterprise networking features as Home, but shares the same kernel as Pro. Comparing it to Me is also ridiculous --and you're talking to a guy whose first machine was a Turbo XT back in `91 running DOS 3.31 and has used every Microsoft OS since then at one time or another.

Agree 100%. XP Pro and Home are very similar with the exception of Remote Desktop Host and Domain support.

I am running Windows 7 and have been very satisfied with it. Vista is good as well, but 7 does everything Vista does a little bit better and faster. In my experience both Vista and 7 get 10-20% better battery life than XP (I've run all three and Ubuntu 8.10 on my x200T).

Unless yours is a bargain bin X200 with a Celeron processor and 1GB RAM (yes, they DO exist - surprise, surprise!), go with Vista and make sure it's up to date with SP2.

Many gurus and topguns here have already explained why so well.

Sticking with Win XP Pro makes sense if you require full compatibility and no surprises with enterprise software and setups that only play well with XP.

Other than that, there's no reason why Vista won't run like melted butter on an X200 with a C2D processor, 2GB RAM and above and better yet a 7,200 rpm HDD or SDD.

Even my Santa Rosa X61 (it NEVER had any overheating problems - ever) has no issue with Vista SP2.

So your X200 should do fine with Vista SP2.

Moving forward, Win 7 is still the way to go. Will wait for its eventual official release before upgrading the hardware. Not in a hurry as I'm happy with Vista Business SP2 at the moment.
