What added hardware benefits would waiting until Windows Vista to get a T-series give me?

I'm not talking about Vista itself, I've already used it pretty extensively and know what I like and don't like about it. I'm just asking, if I wait another 2+ months for Vista to come out and become factory installed on the T-series laptops, what other benefits do you think will come of it?

Will they release an improved T61 model when Vista comes out? Any new drastically improved laptop processors on the near horizon? I don't keep up with future hardware releases much these days as I've learned something better will always come out shortly after - it's just in this case I KNOW Vista will be here so if I could justify waiting with maybe one or two other worthwhile hardware advances, then maybe I'd wait. :D

I don't think there will be anything new when Vista is released. But sometime after that Santa Rosa will be released and at some point, there should be a Santa Rosa ThinkPad. It will be up to Lenovo to decide how soon they do that though.

Most likely if you get the laptop now and wait for the upgrade, you won't be getting it until March. The site explicitly says that they will ship the upgrade 6-8 weeks after the consumer product launch.

It's all a matter of what you really want. It seems to me that you would be more likely to get Vista sooner if you buy after it's out, but then you have to wait and won't have the ability to run Windows XP if Vista has major issues.

Lastly, it's important to understand that ModusLink, the Vista upgrade provider, is not doing too well with their site and order processing. Hopefully they will get their act together, but so far they haven't. I just got my order in yesterday by some act of god, but the order failed on the website and I didn't get a confirmation. It was only when I went to try again and my COA came back as invalid that I even decided to contact them. I gave them a call and apparently my order was actually received. Also, once you get that far, you need to send them your proof of purchase in the form of an invoice by either mail, fax, or e-mail. I have yet to get confirmation on that, but I only sent that in yesterday. So far, not too happy with the process, but hopefully it will be over soon and I'll just be waiting for my shipment.

do you need to have a legit windows on your laptop to get the upgrade? Or does that not matter at all?

Vista doesn't suck in my experience. I haven't found as many reasons as I'd like to justify it over the very stable and established XP OS, though, but I still enjoy using the Vista builds I've tried so far.

I've already 'tried' ubuntu. It's nice to play around with, in fact I keep an install of it on my flash drive as a backup OS or just to mess around with, but I wouldn't want to use it as a sole/primary OS, especially with all of the proprietary industry-specific software I'm responsible for that never has and never will run properly on a linux distro.

You just need to have purchased an XP-equipped PC from an eligible OEM since they started doing the 'free' upgrade offer.

    how much is the shipping/handling?

do we HAVE TO order the Vista Upgrade thorugh Lenovo? Could we just purchase Vista at a local store, and get the rebate?

Shipping/handling is $10 and typically is all you have to pay with some exceptions depending on the vendor and 'cross-over' in question.

I'm fairly certain you can't buy it at the store and mail in the rebate.
