I did a clean install of Vista Ultimate and installed some thinkvantage software and other programs

I have 88 processes at startup.

Is there a program out there that will help me clean up unnecessary processes?

Run MSCONFIG and turn off everything except for AV/AS.

go to "run" and type msconfig, you could disable all programs that start during boot.

There's a program called "Startup Run", that works fine for XP. I like it because you don't need to install it and it's really tiny. It allows you to delete entries in startup folders temporarily or permanently. Get it here:

It is a bit old (2004), so I'm not sure if it will work on Vista.

I had a similar problem and got the processes down to 70....

Just go to the "start search" portion of Vista's start menu and type "services.msc". From there, you can turn off various services.

    Check out :
    http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/servicecfg.htm

Will give you an idea of what you can turn off. For example, I turned off Security Center, Windows Firewall (I have Comodo), Defender (have other anti-spyware software), Windows Media Center/Player extender receiver etc (good idea to keep windows media player itself for various websites but get rid of the crap that works with the Xbox or shares to other computers).. Also, if you installed Itunes or Adobe software, make sure to get rid of stupid Bonjour service (mdnsresponder) ;p. If disabling doesn't work (ie, it reactivates), you may have to delete it - http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/2008/02/10/how-to-uninstall-or-remove-bonjour-mdnsresponderexe/

Do you guys with low process numbers actually feel a difference in speed?

absolutely, these unnecessary processeses are worse than spyware, they eat your ram really fast. Everytime I installed a new windows, I always make sure to run msconfig and ensure there are no unnecessary programs running without my knowledge.

exactly what a few said above.. run.. msconfig.. and try unclicking everything in the startup.. then go one by one and see what you really need.. antivirus.. etc.. and leave the junk unclicked.. like quicktime.. adobe stuff.. etc.. that you dont need to startup at windows startup.. a lot of programs are bad for that kind of thing.. even some of the lenovo software is a memory hog at startup..

QFE. You could also try using programs like CCleaner. But since your installation is fresh, I don't think you'll need CCleaner... yet. But still, you have to admit, Vista IS bloated.

ccleaner is good if you are doing a cleanup of a system in use.. it will clean the registry and clean temp directories..etc.. he has a clean install so his best bet is to limit services and programs from startup to maximize startup times and memory usage

u can use TweakVI for Windows Vista and it will go thru and optimize vista somewhat.. of course turning off UAC and other not necessary services..etc..

    http://www.totalidea.com/content/tweakvi/tweakvi-index.php

the free vers lets u do some tweaking.. works fine.. i used it when i used easyBCD
