    Hi All,

I am just wondering what current/former thinkpad Z series owners moved on to from their Z series'- and whether it was a happy transition or not. I realize that laptop choice greatly depends on needs, budget etc etc- I am just curious b/c I am currently shopping/researching for a replacement for my Z61t (my first thinkpad) and am now realizing just how spoiled I have been (specs in my profile for those curious).

So, what are you all using now? Are you happy? Why or why not?

    thanks!

I never owned a Z series but it pretty much paved way for widescreen versions of the ThinkPad, it was radical for a ThinkPad as most had 4:3 screens at the time but widescreen adoption grew and eventually became the standard nowadays.

Out of the current line the T series is probably the more natural successor for the short lived Z series if you're looking for a replacement of your Z61t.

    ^^ Yup to the above.

I can tell you I like my Z61t. Yes it isn't 4:3 but not a significant difference. You could look at a T400 or a T410 as a replacement, they are very cheap these days.

well i guess T series will be something you should be looking at. T410s or T420s would be excellent choice right now, if your budget allows.

    thanks all

yes, the t series is definately on my list of possible replacements (T420si/T420s) I was just wondering if there were other choices that people had made that they were happy with- including non-thinkpad machines. My brothers are trying to talk me into an elitebook but.....we'll see.

can it be that a T series is the only real choice out there?

Once you go ThinkPad, nearly all other laptops will feel inferior.

I would say go try out the other laptops if you can. But being used to the ThinkPad keyboard, overall feel, you won't like many other laptops lol.

well the thing is if you use a Thinkpad for a while, you are accustomed to the Thinkpad layouts and keyboard feel. Elitebooks are okay, it certainly offers many competitive features against the likes of Thinkpads. You could also consider a Latitude which is very similar to the Elitebooks.

i own a dell workstation and an ultraportable thinkpad. while i mostly agree with this post, the new dell latitudes are pretty crap IMO. they feel cheap and look tacky compared to the E6x00 and E6x10 series. Check the dell subforum and you'll see many negative threads.

the new precisions (workstation line) are good though, and the new vostro's (small business line) are a nice step up from the older ones.

havent seen/used the new elitebooks, however they look competitive. i really think dell is out for this round though with their latitudes
